Addi Mack Scores Career-High 35 in Maryland Women's Basketball Loss
The No. 20 Terrapins mounted a fierce second-half comeback in Paris, but ultimately fell 101-93 to No. 1 South Carolina.
The No. 20 Maryland women's basketball team fell 101-93 to No. 1 South Carolina in Paris on Monday, despite a career-high 35 points from sophomore guard Addi Mack that fueled a frantic second-half comeback. The season-opening matchup marked the start of head coach Brenda Frese's 25th season at the helm of the program.
Maryland struggled significantly in the opening twenty minutes, falling behind by as many as 31 points. South Carolina dominated the first half, shooting efficiently from the floor and capitalizing on a distinct size advantage in the paint to build a commanding 61-33 halftime lead.
The game completely shifted after intermission as Mack took control of the Terrapins' offense. The sophomore scored 31 of her 35 points in the second half, shooting 12-for-14 after the break and connecting on six 3-pointers throughout the contest. During a stellar third quarter, Mack poured in 17 points on a perfect 7-for-7 shooting performance.
"Addi put the team on her back," Frese said after the game. Alongside Mack's scoring outburst, Maryland's perimeter shooting came alive. The Terrapins outscored the Gamecocks 60-40 in the second half, hitting 13 of 30 attempts from beyond the arc and slicing a once-massive deficit down to single digits.
Freshman contributions also helped fuel the rally. Guard Trinity Jones added 11 points in her collegiate debut, while Jordyn Jackson chipped in key baskets down the stretch. Maryland managed to cut South Carolina's lead to just six points in the final minute, but the Gamecocks secured the victory by converting late free throws.
Joyce Edwards led South Carolina with 23 points and eight rebounds, while Agot Makeer contributed 20 points, including four 3-pointers. The Gamecocks finished the game shooting 49.3 percent overall and outscored Maryland 52-34 in the paint, maintaining their advantage despite the Terrapins' fierce late surge.
For Maryland, Oluchi Okananwa recorded 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds, while Nunu Agara and Bri McDaniel also reached double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively. The Terps finished with 22 assists on 32 made field goals.
The Terrapins (0-1) will look to bounce back when they return home to host George Mason on Sunday, November 8, at the XFINITY Center for their home opener.
