Adverse Weather Complicates Karwa Chauth Moon Sightings Across India
Rain and thick cloud cover delayed traditional rituals in Delhi and northern regions as women waited to conclude their fast.
Millions of married women across India celebrated Karwa Chauth on Thursday, enduring daylong fasts to pray for the longevity and prosperity of their husbands. The festival, celebrated annually on the fourth day of the dark fortnight in the Hindu month of Kartik, culminated in the evening as observers awaited moonrise. While skies cleared enough in several northern and eastern regions to reveal the lunar crescent, overcast skies and localized rain caused extensive delays across major metropolitan zones, including the National Capital Region.
The evening rituals require observers to break their rigorous waterless fasts only after spotting the moon, performing customary prayers, and offering water known as arghya. According to local astronomical calculations, scheduled moonrise times varied widely across the country, starting as early as 7:06 p.m. in Dibrugarh and around 7:23 p.m. in Guwahati, extending to 8:17 p.m. in New Delhi, and reaching past 9:00 p.m. in parts of western and southern India such as Mumbai and Dwarka.
Prompt sightings brought relief to families in several cities, including Shimla, Jodhpur, Chandigarh, Haldwani, and Guwahati, where women gathered outdoors with lit earthen lamps and traditional sieves to complete their ceremonies with their spouses. In Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh, the moon emerged for less than a minute through heavy mist and cloud cover, providing a momentary window for fortunate observers. Similar brief glimpses were reported in parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Hyderabad.
In contrast, adverse weather cast a pall of uncertainty over New Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, and surrounding areas. The India Meteorological Department attributed local rainfall, lightning, and overcast conditions to atmospheric instability influenced by the cyclonic storm Arnab originating in the Bay of Bengal. Afternoon and evening winds reaching up to 20 kilometers per hour carried dense cloud cover over the capital, completely obscuring the horizon even after the projected moonrise window passed.
Faced with persistent overcast skies and prolonged delays, many women turned to alternative methods to finish their religious observances. Some families relied on mobile broadcasts, live video feeds, and photographs shared by relatives in cities where the skies were clear to perform the symbolic sighting of the moon. Others consulted cultural customs and astrological guidance to determine when and how to conclude the fast without a direct view of the sky.
Astrologer Pandit Narendra Upadhyay explained that tradition provides specific recourse when bad weather obstructs the moon. According to Upadhyay, observers should wait past the city's designated moonrise time for clouds to part. If conditions remain obscured, women are permitted to face the direction where the moon has risen, offer water while invoking Chandra Dev, and complete the ritual. He noted that invoking Lord Shiva, who bears the crescent moon upon his forehead, or symbolizing the moon on clean cloth using whole rice grains or a silver coin, are accepted alternatives across various regional customs.
The day's religious observances had commenced before sunrise with the consumption of sargi, a pre-dawn meal of fruits, sweets, and nuts customarily prepared and gifted by mothers-in-law. Between 5:38 p.m. and 6:56 p.m., women gathered to recite the sacred Karwa Chauth narrative, recounting the tale of Veeravati, whose devotion to the fast and subsequent worship of Goddess Parvati restored her husband's life. The story underscores the festival's deep cultural emphasis on marital fidelity, sacrifice, and divine benevolence.
Despite the logistical and meteorological hurdles presented by seasonal weather patterns, the festival drew widespread observance across northern, western, and central states. Local authorities and community centers facilitated gatherings in residential neighborhoods, while religious scholars urged participants to prioritize health and patience over literal visibility when severe weather prevents celestial observation.
