Australia's top-ranked tennis player, Alex de Minaur, secured a hard-fought opening-round victory at the ATP 500 Erste Bank Open in Vienna on Monday, defeating Czech qualifier Tomas Machac 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. Facing a dominant opponent who fired accurate winners and capitalized on early errors, De Minaur staged a dramatic comeback to advance to the round of 16.

For the first three-quarters of the match, Machac controlled the court. The Czech player cruised through the opening set 6-1 in just 34 minutes, capitalizing on De Minaur's struggles to land his first serves. When Machac secured an early break in the second set and went up 30-0 on De Minaur's serve, the Australian was just six points away from a straight-sets defeat.

However, De Minaur turned the tide by winning four consecutive points to hold serve and immediately broke Machac in a tense three-deuce game. After surviving a grueling, nine-minute service game, De Minaur broke again to clinch the second set. Machac attempted to regain momentum by breaking at the start of the third set, but De Minaur responded by winning the next five games to secure the victory in two hours and three minutes with a closing ace.

"For three-quarters of that match it was very tough for me," De Minaur said after the match. "I have dug deep, found a way to get a crucial break when I needed it, and the momentum changed." He added that his recent deep runs in Asian tournaments helped him navigate the difficult situation, noting that he was able to draw on those experiences and hit important serves when required.

The victory is vital for De Minaur as he fights to secure a qualification spot for the prestigious end-of-season ATP Finals in Turin, which features the top eight players of the season. Entering the Vienna tournament ranked tenth in the season standings, he needs a strong finish to break into the top qualifying positions, especially with Jannik Sinner absent from regular tour play.

Looking ahead to the next round, De Minaur will face either American world No. 18 Learner Tien or France's Luca van Assche in the last 16. Meanwhile, fellow Australian Rinky Hijikata is set to face American Taylor Fritz in Basel, a match that could indirectly impact the qualification race.
