The 2026 Ballon d'Or ceremony took place this past Monday at the Palladium Theatre in London, marking the first time the prestigious event was held outside of France. The evening celebrated the top performers in global football, with England captain Harry Kane securing the men's Ballon d'Or and Spanish midfielder Alexia Putellas claiming the women's trophy for the third time in her career.

Harry Kane, 33, was recognized for his prolific goal-scoring performance throughout the year. His victory makes him the first Englishman to receive the honor since Michael Owen in 2001. During his acceptance speech, an emotional Kane credited his success to the support of his family and teammates at Bayern Munich, noting that the London setting provided a special atmosphere for his achievement.

The men's race was described by ceremony host Kate Scott as one of the most competitive in recent history. Kane ultimately finished ahead of finalists Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappe. Other notable rankings included Erling Haaland and Michael Olise, while established stars such as Lionel Messi and Rodri also appeared in the top ten list released by the organization.

On the women's side, Alexia Putellas solidified her legacy by winning her third Ballon d'Or. Her victory continues a dominant streak for Spanish players, as she and teammate Aitana Bonmati have now secured every women's Ballon d'Or trophy awarded over the last six years. Putellas used her time on stage to encourage young athletes, telling children to pursue their dreams with "love and passion."

Despite high expectations surrounding her performance, Khadija "Bunny" Shaw finished behind Poland's Ewa Pajor in the final rankings. The results also highlighted the global reach of the sport, with Kansas City Current forward Temwa Chawinga rounding out the top ten as the highest-ranked player competing outside of Europe. Meanwhile, Rose Lavelle represented the United States as the highest-ranked American player, finishing in 27th place.

The ceremony also recognized excellence across several other categories. Paris Saint-Germain was named the Men's Club of the Year, while Barcelona received the honor for the women's side. Individual awards were also distributed, including the Kopa Trophy for best young player, which went to Lamine Yamal and Vicky Lopez, and the Yashin Trophy for best goalkeeper, awarded to Unai Simon and Cata Coll.

Humanitarian efforts were highlighted through the Socrates Award, presented to Arsenal and England winger Bukayo Saka for his contributions to the Big Shoe charity. The event concluded with a tribute to notable figures in the sport, serving as a final celebration of the year's achievements before the football community turns its attention to the upcoming season.
