Amaia Montero addresses public criticism during La Oreja de Van Gogh tour
The singer has spoken out about the emotional toll of negative commentary surrounding her return to the band.
Spanish singer Amaia Montero has publicly addressed the intense scrutiny she has faced since reuniting with her former band, La Oreja de Van Gogh. After a year of performing across Spain for their 'Tantas Cosas Que Contar' tour, Montero revealed that the ongoing negative feedback regarding her performances and personal appearance has significantly impacted her well-being.
The reunion of the original lineup, announced in October 2025, was celebrated as a major musical event three decades after the group's inception. While the tour has seen sold-out venues and widespread commercial success, it has also been accompanied by persistent criticism on social media. Critics have frequently scrutinized video clips of live performances, focusing on the singer's vocal delivery and stage presence.
The situation reached a turning point when Montero responded to an Instagram video posted by a content creator who defended her against the online backlash. In the comments section of the post, Montero expressed her distress, writing, "Thank you very much, I am suffering a lot." This candid admission has sparked concern among her fanbase, particularly given her well-documented history with mental health challenges.
This is not the first time the singer has addressed the negativity surrounding the tour. Earlier in the year, following a performance in Bilbao, she dismissed rumors that she might leave the project. At that time, she characterized the criticism as "noise" and "lies," emphasizing that she was prioritizing her personal well-being and remained committed to the band's schedule.
The public response to her recent admission has been largely supportive, with fans and peers alike rallying to her defense. Many have taken to social media to condemn the harassment and remind the public of her significant contributions to Spanish music. Notably, Leire Martínez, who served as the band's vocalist for two decades, has also spoken out to demand respect for Montero and denounce the media harassment directed at her.
Despite the emotional challenges, La Oreja de Van Gogh continues to move forward with its professional commitments. The group is currently finishing the Spanish leg of their tour, which includes major performances at the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona and the Movistar Arena in Madrid. Looking ahead, the band has confirmed plans to bring their tour to Latin America, with a specific focus on Mexico, which they describe as their "second home."
In addition to their live performances, the band is expanding into the film industry. They have announced a new romantic musical titled 'Puedes contar conmigo,' which will feature their catalog of songs as the narrative foundation. The project, directed by Fernando González Molina, is currently in the advanced stages of script development and production.
