Antonelli Wins United States Grand Prix but Formula 1 Title Hunt Moves to Mexico
The Italian driver secured victory in Austin, but missed the complex combination of results required to clinch the championship early.
Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli won the United States Grand Prix on Sunday at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, but his quest to clinch the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship was postponed for at least another week. Although Antonelli crossed the finish line first in the eighteenth round of the season, he did not secure the precise mathematical combination of results needed to wrap up the title with races to spare.
Entering the weekend, the scenarios required for Antonelli to secure the championship in Texas were exceptionally narrow. Mercedes team management had previously downplayed expectations, with deputy team principal Bradley Lord estimating the odds of sealing the title in Austin at roughly one in 25. Antonelli himself had previously pointed toward the upcoming Mexican Grand Prix as a more realistic target for his championship aspirations.
For the title celebration to happen in Austin, Antonelli needed to win the race while his closest rivals suffered specific setbacks. George Russell had to finish ninth or worse, and Lewis Hamilton could finish no higher than fifth. For much of the race, those exact conditions appeared possible after Russell received a five-second time penalty for gaining an advantage outside the track limits during the opening lap.
However, Russell managed to claw his way back up the order by the end of the race, and Hamilton secured fourth place. Max Verstappen finished the race second, applying heavy pressure throughout the afternoon with a two-stop strategy compared to Antonelli's single-stop approach, while Charles Leclerc rounded out the podium in third place.
Despite having to wait for the championship crown, Antonelli executed a flawless race from pole position. After maintaining his lead through the first corner, the Italian driver managed his tire wear effectively on a one-stop strategy using medium and hard compounds. He successfully fended off pressure from Verstappen in the closing laps to claim the race victory.
With the Texas round concluded, Antonelli will now head to the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez for the Mexican Grand Prix on November 1 with a significantly easier path to the title. The Italian driver will only need a ninth-place finish, securing two points, to bring the championship home to Italy, provided his closest rivals do not win the race.
Should the championship battle extend even further, the final matches would await in Brazil at Interlagos. Antonelli has expressed deep admiration for Ayrton Senna, wearing the number 12 in honor of the three-time Brazilian champion, making a potential title clinch at Interlagos an appealing prospect if the fight continues beyond Mexico.
