Australian Cricketer Chris Lynn Served One-Month Ban for Cocaine Use

The veteran T20 specialist completed a treatment program after testing positive for a cocaine metabolite during a tournament in England.

Australian cricketer Chris Lynn has served a one-month suspension following a positive test for benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine. The 36-year-old athlete, known for his prolific scoring in T20 leagues, was sanctioned by the Cricket Regulator after an anti-doping test conducted on July 18, 2026, during England's T20 Blast tournament.

The suspension, which spanned from July 31 to August 30, 2026, was not immediately disclosed to the public until the Cricket Regulator released details regarding the violation. Lynn had been representing the Northants Steelbacks at the time of the test, having participated in the team's T20 Blast Finals Day performances at Edgbaston.

In his admission, Lynn stated that he had consumed cocaine during a period spanning the evening of July 15 and the early hours of July 16, 2026. This timeframe occurred shortly before his participation in the tournament's final rounds. Despite the timing, the regulator accepted that the substance use was an 'out-of-competition violation' and concluded that it did not influence his sporting performance.

The initial penalty proposed by the regulator was a three-month ban. However, this was reduced to one month after Lynn agreed to participate in and successfully complete a substance abuse treatment program. The Cricket Regulator, an independent body established in late 2023 to oversee compliance, confirmed that Northamptonshire would not face any sanctions related to the player's positive test.

Following his stint in England, Lynn traveled to Sri Lanka to compete in the Lanka Premier League. He appeared in only one match before being sidelined by a leg injury. He has not participated in professional cricket since that injury occurred, and he is currently a free agent as the Australian Big Bash League season approaches. Reports have indicated potential interest from the Melbourne Renegades, though no official contract has been confirmed.

Lynn, who has previously represented Australia in four one-day internationals and 18 Twenty20 internationals, has not played for the national team since 2018. His career has been defined by his status as a high-scoring specialist in various domestic T20 leagues globally. As of now, the player has completed his mandated treatment and suspension period.
