The Auténticos Tigres of the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL) emerged victorious in a high-stakes Clásico Regio, defeating the Borregos of the Monterrey Institute of Technology (ITESM) 34-31 in overtime. The game, held at a packed Estadio Gaspar Mass, served as a pivotal matchup in the 14 Grandes Conference of the ONEFA league, effectively deciding the top seed for the upcoming playoffs.

The contest, originally scheduled for early October but postponed due to heavy rainfall, lived up to its reputation as one of the most intense rivalries in Mexican collegiate football. The UANL squad initially dominated the first half, establishing a 14-0 lead following a defensive recovery for a touchdown by Carlos Moreno and a scoring reception by Christian Espinosa. Although the Borregos managed to narrow the gap before halftime, the Tigres entered the break with a 21-14 advantage.

The second half saw a significant shift in momentum as the Borregos mounted a comeback. A key interception helped the Monterrey team tie the game at 21-21 in the third quarter. The final period was characterized by constant lead changes, with both teams trading scores. A 33-yard touchdown run by Ángel Alvarado gave the Tigres a 31-28 lead, but a late field goal from Roberto Medina forced the game into overtime.

During the extra period, the Auténticos Tigres' defense successfully contained the Borregos' offense, setting the stage for kicker Fernando Álvarez. His successful 31-yard field goal ultimately clinched the 34-31 win. This victory keeps the Tigres undefeated with an 8-0 record, while the Borregos fall to 7-1, marking a significant outcome for the conference standings.

The match was not without setbacks for both rosters. The Tigres lost their quarterback, Mirko Martos, during the second half due to a clavicle injury. Similarly, the Borregos were forced to play the final quarter and overtime without their star running back, Fernando Mayén, who had been instrumental in their offensive efforts throughout the game.

Reflecting on the challenges leading up to the game, UANL head coach Antonio Zamora noted the difficulty of the schedule, explaining that the teams had to prepare for this high-pressure matchup with only three days of rest following their previous weekend games. Despite the logistical hurdles, the performance of both teams underscored the competitive nature of the 81-year-old rivalry.

As the regular season nears its conclusion, the Auténticos Tigres are set to face the Linces of the UVM, while the Borregos will travel to play the Burros Blancos of the National Polytechnic Institute. With the top spot in the conference now secured, the Tigres look toward the postseason with momentum, while the Borregos aim to refine their strategy for the final stretch of the year.
