Bayern Munich Hosts Arsenal in High-Stakes UEFA Champions League Clash
Domestic heavyweights meet at the Allianz Arena as Vincent Kompany and Mikel Arteta face off in European play.
FC Bayern Munich welcomes Arsenal to the Allianz Arena on Wednesday for a marquee UEFA Champions League matchup. The fixture pits two domestic heavyweights against each other, with both managers—Bayern's Vincent Kompany and Arsenal's Mikel Arteta—having played together previously at Manchester City and remaining unbeaten in their respective domestic leagues this season.
Arsenal enters the match as the only side yet to concede a goal in this season's Champions League competition. The Gunners secured a 1-0 win away at Napoli and a 3-0 victory against Lille in their earlier European outings, followed by a narrow 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest over the weekend courtesy of Noni Madueke. Manager Mikel Arteta has made two changes to the starting line-up from the weekend, bringing in Madueke and Jurrien Timber to replace Eberechi Eze and Ben White.
Speaking ahead of the match, Arteta addressed the lingering motivation from last season's Champions League final defeat, where Arsenal lost to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties. "I tried, but I haven't managed to," Arteta said regarding moving on from the loss. "I tried for many weeks during the summer, but when I see the ball, the scenes, I hear the music, I want it so badly. We know that we have to go step by step, but I think that fire is within the team and all of us individually."
Arteta also shrugged off recent criticism regarding his team's style of play after winning 10 of 11 games across all competitions this season. "People have their own opinions. We have our own opinion. At the end of the day, we have lost one game in 11 this season and if you call that boring or irritating, I don't know what to say," he stated.
Bayern's European campaign has delivered mixed drama so far. Kompany's squad opened with a dominant 5-0 victory over Bodø/Glimt, but was subsequently held to a 3-3 draw by Viking after squandering a lead and conceding a late equalizer following Michael Olise's red card. The German giants bounced back domestically with a resounding 6-1 thrashing of RB Leipzig, fueled by a hat-trick from Luis Diaz.
The German side enters the fixture missing a few key contributors. Olise is suspended for the match, while Joshua Kimmich is unavailable due to a family bereavement.
Historically, the two clubs have met 15 times previously, all within the Champions League, with Bayern securing eight victories to Arsenal's four alongside three draws. Last season, Arsenal claimed a 3-1 victory in London during the league phase, though the English club has historically struggled in Munich, having won only once there in the 2012/13 round of 16.
