Bears Defeat Falcons 31-7 Behind Caleb Williams' Return

Quarterback Caleb Williams returned from a hamstring injury to lead the Chicago Bears to a dominant victory over the Atlanta Falcons.

The Chicago Bears secured a dominant 31-7 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, jumping out to an early 14-0 lead that eventually swelled to 31-7 by the fourth quarter. Despite an improbable late surge from Atlanta, the early deficit proved insurmountable.

Bears quarterback Caleb Williams made a triumphant return after missing the last several weeks due to a hamstring injury. Williams showed no signs of rust, completing his first 12 passes and finishing the day 30-of-36 for 305 yards and a touchdown. According to Next Gen Stats, when facing no pressure, Williams went 24-of-24 for 248 yards, marking the most pass attempts without an incompletion from a clean pocket since at least 2018.

While the Chicago offense hummed with efficiency, the Atlanta secondary struggled significantly. Veteran cornerback Mike Hughes faced a difficult challenge stepping into the primary boundary role due to injuries. Hughes surrendered 103 yards and a touchdown on six catches out of seven targets, leading to a 158.3 quarterback rating for opposing passers. This performance continues a tough stretch for Hughes, who has allowed a league-high 394 yards in coverage this season.

Atlanta head coach Kevin Stefanski expressed support for the veteran corner on Monday, noting that the team will work through defensive issues during the week. "We'll work through all those things this week. Obviously, Mike's a vet that we're counting on," Stefanski said. "These are tough matchups. We can always look at things that we can do better."

The defensive struggles extend beyond a single player for the Falcons, who have dropped to No. 20 in EPA per pass and No. 28 in passing yards allowed per game. Over six contests this season, Atlanta has allowed 270 or more passing yards four times. The depleted secondary may soon receive reinforcements, however.

Stefanski confirmed that top cornerback A.J. Terrell Jr. is trending toward returning from injured reserve after missing the last four weeks with a groin injury. Backup cornerback C.J. Henderson could also return this week after missing Sunday's action due to a similar groin injury, which would provide crucial depth for the Falcons as they prepare to face the undefeated San Francisco 49ers.

Meanwhile, the victory gives the Chicago Bears significant momentum as they prepare for a short turnaround to face the New England Patriots on Thursday night. Boosted by Williams' stellar return, strong home-field advantage metrics, and their defensive knack for forcing turnovers, the Bears look to maintain their winning form in prime time.
