Benfica's women's basketball team achieved one of the club's most notable continental victories this past Thursday by defeating Hungary's Sopron 72-62 in the EuroCup Women. Played at the Pavilhão Fidelidade, the hard-fought match marked the third consecutive victory for the Lisbon side in Group I.

Despite a slow start that left the hosts trailing 22-16 at the end of the first quarter, Benfica fought back through strong defense and outside shooting. Schaquilla Nunn led the standout performance with 22 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists, while crucial three-pointers from teammates like Josephine Filipe and Inês Faustino helped level the score by halftime.

The momentum carried into the second half as Benfica outplayed their opponents in the remaining quarters. With this win, the squad coached by Ricardo Vasconcelos stands alone at the top of Group I with a perfect record of six points, ahead of their upcoming domestic league fixture against BC Barcelos.

Meanwhile, Benfica's men's football team enjoyed success on the pitch, securing a 4-1 victory over Gil Vicente to advance to the Portuguese Cup semi-finals. Ukrainian midfielder Heorhii Sudakov starred in the match with a brilliant long-range strike into the top-right corner from the edge of the penalty area in the 40th minute.

The football match, however, followed days of controversy surrounding the disciplinary status of forward Jhon Durán. Gil Vicente manager Luís Pinto expressed strong dissatisfaction prior to the game regarding the decision to suspend Durán's red card, which had been issued following a previous fixture against Santa Clara.

Pinto criticized the timing of the reversal, arguing that such actions on the eve of a major match undermine the competitiveness of the tournament. He stated, "If we want a more competitive championship and more competitive Cups, we have to think about the attitudes we take. Penalizing a player who was sent off on the eve of this game puts a lot into question."

Defending the club's actions, Benfica manager Marco Silva explained that the team had clear video evidence and the player's account proving the initial red card was unjust. Silva noted that the club felt compelled to speak out, stating, "The Benfica could not stay silent if it saw a player being unjustly sent off."

Despite voicing frustration over the disciplinary ruling, Pinto acknowledged Benfica's overall quality and performance on the field. The victory advances Benfica deeper into domestic cup competition as they navigate a busy schedule across multiple athletic divisions.
