Bengals Defeat Titans 43-36 in Overtime Thriller at Paycor Stadium
Joe Burrow threw five touchdown passes and ran for another to lift Cincinnati past a resilient Tennessee team on Sunday, November 1.
The Cincinnati Bengals overcame a sluggish start and four turnovers to defeat the Tennessee Titans 43-36 in an overtime thriller at Paycor Stadium on Sunday, November 1. With the victory, the Bengals improved their record to 5-2 on the NFL season, while the Titans dropped to 1-7.
Despite entering the matchup as heavy underdogs, the Titans jumped out to a commanding 13-0 lead in the first quarter behind strong play from running back Tony Pollard and three interceptions thrown by Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow to Tennessee safety Amani Hooker. However, Cincinnati slowly climbed back into the game as Burrow found his rhythm.
Burrow finished the afternoon completing 38 of 48 passes for 462 yards and five touchdowns, alongside his three interceptions. He also added a nine-yard rushing touchdown in overtime to seal the win, marking the first time in his NFL career that he totaled six touchdowns in a single game. "Certainly a stressful day," Burrow said after the victory. "We'll go learn from our mistakes and go from there."
Cincinnati's star wide receivers put up huge numbers in support of their quarterback. Tee Higgins hauled in 10 receptions for 155 yards and two touchdowns, while Ja'Marr Chase contributed 11 catches for 141 yards and a touchdown. Tight end Mike Gesicki also set a franchise record by catching a touchdown pass for the fifth consecutive game.
The Titans fought valiantly despite playing without star defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, who was recently traded, and leading receiver Carnell Tate. Quarterback Cam Ward recorded his first 300-yard passing game, completing 26 of 40 passes for 304 yards and two touchdowns. Pollard added 117 rushing yards and two scores on 21 carries to keep Tennessee competitive throughout regulation.
Tennessee managed to take a 36-29 lead late in the fourth quarter following an 15-yard touchdown pass from Ward to receiver Wan'Dale Robinson. But Burrow engineered a crucial 10-play, 81-yard drive capped by an 18-yard touchdown pass to Higgins with just 1.17 remaining on the clock to tie the game at 36-36.
In the extra session, the Bengals' defense forced a quick stop, and Burrow led a seven-play, 70-yard drive that ended with his game-winning scramble into the end zone. Reflecting on the team's ability to finish the comeback, head coach Zac Taylor praised his squad's resilience compared to previous seasons.
Following this grueling home victory, the Bengals will prepare to travel overseas to Madrid, Spain, to face the Atlanta Falcons on November 8. Meanwhile, the Titans will enter their bye week before returning to action on November 15 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
