VfL Bochum will look to turn its difficult campaign around when it hosts VfL Wolfsburg at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion on Friday. Entering the 9th matchday of the 2. Bundesliga season, Bochum finds itself under immense pressure near the bottom of the standings in 16th place, having accumulated only seven points from its first eight fixtures.

Bochum enters the matchup following a rough patch of form that includes three consecutive defeats in all competitions. Most recently, Uwe Rösler's side suffered a 2-0 loss away to Kaiserslautern, a match in which the team struggled offensively despite holding possession. Prior to that, Bochum dropped a 1-0 decision to Arminia Bielefeld, highlighting a troubling lack of cutting edge in the final third.

Frustrated by the team's offensive output, striker Philipp Hofmann publicly called for more energy and better service from the wide areas. Rösler held intensive discussions with club ultra representatives ahead of the fixture, promising to address the supporters' concerns and inject more passion onto the pitch as the squad fights to climb out of the relegation battle.

Compounding Bochum's troubles are significant defensive and midfield injuries. The hosts will be missing Philipp Strompf due to a pubic bone irritation, alongside Jean Manuel Mbom, Oliver Olsen, and Enis Cokaj. Babis Drakas is also sidelined with a knee injury, severely limiting Rösler's tactical options and defensive stability.

In stark contrast, VfL Wolfsburg arrives in Bochum riding a wave of strong form and prolific goalscoring. Managed by Tobias Strobl, the visitors sit third in the league table and boast a formidable attack that leads the division. Wolfsburg has netted 17 goals across its last five matches in all competitions, including a 3-1 victory over Heidenheim, a 4-4 draw with Nuremberg, and a dominant 5-1 win against Darmstadt.

Despite their offensive prowess, Wolfsburg has shown vulnerabilities at the back, having conceded at least one goal in each of their last five league encounters. Strobl's side will also have to manage without several key personnel, as Fraser Hornby, Rogério, Trevor Benedict, and injured player Aster Vranckx are unavailable for the trip.

Historically, Wolfsburg has held the upper hand in direct meetings, claiming five victories out of eight previous competitive fixtures. However, Bochum previously demonstrated its capability to upset the trend with a 3-1 victory in 2023, leaving both teams with everything to play for as kickoff approaches at 6:30 p.m. local time.
