Brooklyn Nets Drop to 0-4 Following Overtime Heartbreaker Against Celtics
Jayson Tatum hit a buzzer-beating jumper in the extra period to deny Brooklyn its first victory of the season.
The Brooklyn Nets suffered a heartbreaking 125-124 overtime defeat against the Boston Celtics on Tuesday night at TD Garden, remaining winless through the first week of the regular season. Boston forward Jayson Tatum delivered the decisive blow, sinking a pull-up jumper from the free-throw line at the final buzzer to cap a 40-point performance and deny the visitors an upset road victory.
Brooklyn, now 0-4 to begin the campaign, pushed the Celtics to the brink through a dramatic fourth-quarter sequence. Boston held a late lead after Derrick White converted a three-point play on a dunk with 34 seconds remaining in regulation. However, Celtics center Neemias Queta fouled Julius Randle following a missed free throw, fouling out of the contest. Boston coach Joe Mazzulla inserted Mitchell Robinson, who was promptly fouled by the Nets and missed both attempts at the stripe. Nets rookie Mikel Brown Jr. seized the opening, drilling a game-tying 3-pointer with two seconds left to send the game into overtime.
The Nets carried that momentum into the extra session, capitalizing on Boston missing six of its first seven field goals to build a four-point advantage. Brooklyn went cold down the stretch, however, failing to score another point after Michael Porter Jr. sank a 3-pointer with 2:01 remaining. Brown missed his final five shot attempts of the night, including a pair of contested layups in the closing five seconds that could have preserved the victory. Paul George secured the rebound off Brown's final miss and called a timeout, setting up Tatum's game-winner.
Despite the agonizing finish, Brooklyn received significant production from its veteran leaders and rotational depth. Porter led the team with 27 points and 12 rebounds, while Randle contributed 24 points and nine rebounds. Brown finished with 17 points, and both Moritz Wagner and Chaney Johnson chipped in 15 points apiece to keep the Nets competitive on a court where Boston had previously overwhelmed opponents.
Tatum carried the scoring burden for Boston, logging 42 minutes without committing a turnover while adding eight assists and five rebounds. He made 18 of 22 free throws, setting a career high for attempts at the line and joining Larry Bird as the only players in Celtics history to record at least 40 points, eight assists, and zero turnovers in a game. George added 20 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists, while White scored 16 points and Jordan Walsh contributed 15.
Despite the victory, Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla noted after the contest that Boston would handle the performance "like a loss" during film study to address defensive lapses and late-game mistakes. Boston shot just 11-for-41 from beyond the arc and allowed Brooklyn to lead for the entirety of the second quarter, facing a 61-56 deficit at halftime before mounting a third-quarter run sparked by bench contributions.
For Brooklyn, the outcome prolongs an uphill start to the year. The Nets entered Tuesday allowing 123.7 points per game and were coming off consecutive defeats, including a 136-109 blowout loss to the Indiana Pacers. General manager Sean Marks indicated this preseason that the franchise is searching for "the next Nets," focusing on long-term development amid an early slate marked by heavy minutes for Randle and Porter, as well as growing pains for rookies like Brown.
The Nets will now look to regroup and search for their elusive first win of the season, while the Celtics improve to 3-1 ahead of Friday's NBA Cup group stage meeting against the Chicago Bulls.
