Bukayo Saka Receives Socrates Award at Ballon d'Or Ceremony in London
The Arsenal forward was honored for his humanitarian work and extensive charitable contributions supporting disadvantaged children.
Bukayo Saka collected the Socrates Award on Monday night during the Ballon d'Or ceremony, which was hosted in London for the first time in its 70-year history. The prestigious event took place at the London Palladium Theatre, bringing together elite football figures from across the globe to celebrate the standout achievements of the season.
Established in 2022, the Socrates Award is named after the late Brazil captain and political activist. It is presented annually to recognize professional players for their dedication to social initiatives, humanitarian efforts, and charity work off the pitch. Previous recipients of the honor include Sadio Mané, Vinícius Júnior, and Jennifer Hermoso.
Nigerian superstar Burna Boy presented the award to Saka, opening the envelope and remarking, 'Just as I guessed.' The 25-year-old England international has collaborated extensively with the BigShoe charity over the past several years, focusing particularly on funding medical surgeries and providing vital assistance to underprivileged youth.
Rather than focusing on his own achievements during his acceptance speech, Saka used the platform to share a letter from a 14-year-old boy in Rwanda whose life was changed by the organization. The boy explained how he began losing his sight at age twelve in a village lacking electricity, which left him unable to read or play normally. After receiving necessary eye care through BigShoe, his vision was restored.
'More importantly, I no longer need to worry about feeling different. I can enjoy being a child again,' Saka read aloud from the letter. 'For the first time in a long time, I am excited about my future. I want to become an English teacher one day. I know many of you here tonight have achieved your childhood dreams and now I believe I can achieve mine too.'
Saka expressed deep gratitude for the recognition and explained why supporting these charitable causes holds profound personal meaning for him and his family. He reflected on the universal joy children feel when playing with a football and emphasized his commitment to helping others experience that same happiness and access better opportunities.
The recognition arrived just days after Saka was forced to leave the pitch early due to a leg injury during a match against Bayern Munich, making his appearance in London a welcome sight for supporters. Alongside Saka's humanitarian award, the historic ceremony celebrated major athletic achievements, including Harry Kane winning the men's Ballon d'Or and Alexia Putellas claiming the women's honor.
