Clippers Rout Kings 121-96 in Season Opener Behind Garland's 30 Points
Darius Garland led a dominant performance at Intuit Dome as the Los Angeles Clippers overcame a turbulent offseason to defeat the Sacramento Kings.
The Los Angeles Clippers tipped off the 2026-27 NBA season with a resounding 121-96 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday night at Intuit Dome. Guard Darius Garland paced the hosts with 30 points, shooting 11-of-19 from the field to help the Clippers control the contest from the outset.
The opening-night statement arrived after a turbulent offseason for the Clippers, which included moving on from star player Kawhi Leonard and managing league sanctions related to salary-cap circumvention. Despite missing several rotation players due to injuries—including Bradley Beal, Brandon Ingram, and Max Strus—Los Angeles displayed impressive depth and defensive intensity.
Garland, who joined the franchise in February via trade, orchestrated the offense effectively while exploiting Sacramento's defensive vulnerabilities. Brook Lopez added 17 points and 11 rebounds, Isaiah Jackson scored 13 points, and Gradey Dick chipped in 12. In addition, rookie Keaton Wagler, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, provided a spark off the bench with 15 points and five assists in 29 minutes.
The Kings entered the matchup seeking a fresh start following a difficult 2025-26 campaign that saw them finish near the bottom of the Western Conference. Sacramento was led by Zach LaVine with 28 points, while Domantas Sabonis recorded a double-double with 14 points and 18 rebounds.
However, the rest of the Kings struggled to generate consistent offense. Rookie point guard Darius Acuff Jr., selected seventh overall in the recent draft, experienced a challenging professional debut. The former Arkansas standout scored 12 points but struggled with his shot, converting only 5 of 24 field-goal attempts and missing all seven of his tries from beyond the arc.
Sacramento also faced mounting roster concerns heading into the contest, playing without veteran Ben Simmons, who was ruled out for the year with an Achilles injury following a strong preseason. The team's offensive inconsistencies allowed the Clippers to steadily pull away, stretching their advantage to 23 points by the conclusion of the third quarter.
The dominant performance allowed the Clippers to establish early momentum, though both organizations face significant questions as the new season unfolds. While Los Angeles navigates the aftermath of its roster overhaul, the Kings will look to regroup ahead of their next matchup as they attempt to climb out of the Western Conference basement.
