CoreWeave and Neocloud Stocks Slide as Credit Worries Mount
A warning from SpaceX founder Elon Musk about debt-funded neoclouds has intensified pressure on AI infrastructure providers facing heavy financial obligations.
Shares of artificial intelligence infrastructure providers faced renewed downward pressure following warnings from technology executives regarding the financial stability of debt-funded neoclouds. Companies that rent out graphics processing unit capacity to AI developers experienced notable pullbacks in trading, highlighting broader investor anxiety over heavy leverage in the sector.
SpaceX founder Elon Musk delivered a blunt warning stating that debt markets have largely closed off financing for companies lacking revenue independent of AI data centers. He cautioned that neocloud providers face significant risks of consolidation and failure. Although Musk named no specific firms, market reaction quickly impacted prominent industry players.
CoreWeave saw its stock drop significantly during morning trading sessions, continuing a volatile period for the company. Additional pressure came after Morgan Stanley lowered its price target for CoreWeave from $99 to $70, citing financing uncertainty despite acknowledging the company's leading market position and strong execution. Furthermore, market reports highlighted that CoreWeave's co-founders have unloaded approximately $3.3 billion in stock since their initial public offering in March 2025.
Financial analysts and market observers have pointed to CoreWeave's heavy debt burden as a central risk factor. The company carries approximately $52 billion in loans and lease obligations, with its debt trading at distressed levels. Despite posting explosive revenue growth, high gross margins above 90 percent, and a substantial backlog of AI computing orders, the firm continues to report net losses and negative free cash flow.
Other neocloud companies also experienced declines during the market session, though broader technology indices remained relatively stable. IREN Limited saw its stock slide, while Nebius Group posted minor losses. Meanwhile, the First Trust Cloud Computing ETF held flat and broader market indexes rose slightly, indicating that the current financial stress remains concentrated primarily within GPU-renting neocloud firms rather than the broader technology sector.
The combination of substantial capital expenditure requirements, rising debt costs, and tightening credit conditions has forced investors to closely scrutinize the long-term viability of high-growth infrastructure models. As market participants weigh explosive top-line demand against severe balance sheet liabilities, neocloud providers navigate an increasingly cautious financial landscape.
