Cruz Azul defeated León 2-1 on Sunday in the final match of Week 15 of the Apertura 2026 Liga MX tournament, moving into a three-way tie for the top of the overall standings alongside América and Chivas. The game took place at the stadium, where the home team capitalized on a strong second-half performance to secure the three points.

The first half offered few clear scoring opportunities as León deployed a solid defensive strategy that neutralized Cruz Azul's initial attacks. Despite dominating possession and pushing forward from the opening whistle, La Máquina struggled to find precision in the final third against a well-organized opponent.

The offensive momentum shifted after halftime. In the 56th minute, Andrés Montaño broke the deadlock by successfully converting a penalty kick following a foul on Charly Rodríguez inside the box. The goal marked Montaño's fifth of the tournament, highlighting his strong current form.

Cruz Azul continued to press its advantage and extended the lead in the 76th minute. José Paradela, returning to the field after several weeks out due to an injury, fired a shot that took a deflection off the defense and found the back of the net to make it 2-0 for the home side.

León attempted a late comeback and managed to narrow the deficit during stoppage time. In the 90+10th minute, Alfonso Alvarado converted a penalty kick awarded after a VAR review of a foul by Amaury García, bringing the final score to 2-1.

With this result, Cruz Azul reached 29 points, positioning themselves third in the table behind América and Chivas due to goal differential. Meanwhile, León dropped to seventh place with 22 points as the regular season approaches its final stretch.

Looking ahead to the conclusion of the regular phase, Cruz Azul figures see the team as a strong contender for the championship. Joel Huiqui emphasized the squad's ambition to capture the top spot. "It is a triple tie on goal difference. To be the best, obviously, you have to prove it," Huiqui stated, adding that the team has found a winning rhythm and aims to finish atop the classification before entering the Liguilla.
