Dallas Mavericks Defeat Winless Miami Heat 113-109
The Dallas Mavericks handed the Miami Heat their fourth consecutive loss to start the season despite a vintage performance from Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The Dallas Mavericks secured a 113-109 victory against the Miami Heat at the Kaseya Center, extending Miami's winless start to the regular season. With the loss, the Heat dropped to an 0-4 record, continuing a difficult opening stretch that has intensified scrutiny over the team's early-season performance.
Giannis Antetokounmpo provided a bright spot for Miami by flashing vintage form during the contest. The star forward energized the home crowd in the second quarter by driving into the paint and throwing down a powerful two-handed dunk over three Maverick defenders. The play extended the Miami lead to 43-32 and marked the type of dominant sequence fans expected following his offseason trade from the Milwaukee Bucks.
Despite Antetokounmpo leading the Heat with 12 points in the first half, Dallas rallied before intermission. The Mavericks mounted a 15-4 run to outscore Miami 30-25 in the second quarter, taking a 53-52 lead into halftime. Cooper Flagg paced the Mavericks with 13 points in the first two quarters, while PJ Washington added 12 and Kyrie Irving contributed 11.
Miami's offensive struggles extended beyond the first half, particularly for center Bam Adebayo. Facing criticism for his low shooting percentages early in the year, Adebayo finished the game with eight points on 3-of-10 shooting. Speaking after the game, Adebayo dismissed the outside pressure surrounding his slump. “My shot’s not going in. I’m not gonna overthink that. Funny how the outside noise wants to make me the scapegoat. But when the energy shifts, be prepared for that,” he said.
Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra defended his center's efforts and expressed confidence that Adebayo would regain his shooting touch. “He just needs to see the ball go in. He had some good clean looks, he just wasn't able to capitalize on them. We'll work together to get him aggressive in the spots he's comfortable,” Spoelstra noted.
Entering the matchup, the Heat faced mounting questions regarding their offensive rating and defensive consistency. Having made major roster changes during the offseason, Miami has struggled to find a steady rhythm around Antetokounmpo. Meanwhile, the Mavericks managed to secure the road win despite managing injuries to several rotation players, improving their early-season record while handing the Heat another setback.
