Daniil Medvedev advanced to the semi-finals of the Vienna Open on Friday with a commanding 6-2, 6-3 victory over world No. 73 Adrian Mannarino. The win at the ATP 500 tournament not only propelled the Russian into the final four in Austria but also officially guaranteed his qualification for the prestigious ATP Finals in Turin.

Reflecting on his recent trajectory, Medvedev declared that he is firmly "in the groove" following a stellar stretch of matches since the US Open, which has brought him an impressive 18-2 record. His strong run over the past month includes capturing the title at Hangzhou, reaching the semi-finals at both the China Open and the Shanghai Masters, and winning the tournament in Almaty last week.

Despite his straightforward quarter-final win, the world No. 5 did not hold back in criticizing the playing surface in Vienna. Speaking to Tennis TV after the match, the 30-year-old argued that the venue's setup is poorly suited for indoor hard courts.

"In my opinion, for an indoor hard-court, that's not a good court," Medvedev stated. He added that while diversifying conditions makes sense to highlight different player skills, indoor hard courts should favor serving and aggressive play, claiming that a traditional serve-and-volley player would likely struggle severely under current conditions.

Medvedev's path to the semi-finals included a dramatic second-round encounter where he saved a match point to overcome Cameron Norrie 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(1). During that grueling match, his frustration boiled over as he frequently struck the court after losing points.

Standing between Medvedev and a spot in the Vienna final is world No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz. The Spanish star advanced by defeating American Tommy Paul 6-4, 7-6(2) in a tightly contested quarter-final that marked the 50th semi-final appearance of Alcaraz's professional career.

Looking ahead to the upcoming matchup, Medvedev poses a serious challenge for the Spaniard. Alcaraz leads their overall head-to-head record, but the Russian claimed victory in their most recent meeting earlier this season at Indian Wells.
