Donald Trump Slams Bill Maher in Lengthy Social Media Post Following Dinner
President Donald Trump took to social media to heavily criticize political commentator Bill Maher just nine days after praising their recent White House dinner.
President Donald Trump launched a blistering attack against political commentator and talk show host Bill Maher in a lengthy social media post on Sunday. The online diatribe spanned more than 1,300 words on Truth Social, marking what records indicate was the longest social media post of the president's career.
The harsh response came just days after Maher hosted his HBO program, Real Time with Bill Maher, where he discussed his recent dinner at the White House. The gathering earlier this month included the president, Maher, sports analyst Stephen A. Smith, and musician Kid Rock. Despite engaging in friendly conversations during the meal, Maher used his Friday night monologue to mock the president's approval numbers, joke about his commentary on men's physiques, and address other contentious political topics.
During the Friday broadcast, Maher defended his decision to meet directly with the administration, arguing that critics should communicate face-to-face with the president rather than avoid him. Maher also interviewed former White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt on the show, praising the president's demeanor during their private interactions while continuing to criticize his public policies.
The president, however, took strong exception to the program's content and tone. In his Sunday statement, Trump labeled the comedian a complete and total loser, accused him of spreading falsehoods, and claimed that his show relied on a laughter machine. Trump also stated that the dinner lasted roughly two hours rather than the four hours claimed by the host, calling the meeting a waste of time.
The public falling out highlights the volatile and complicated history between the two figures. Last year, Maher dined at the White House and later spoke positively about the interaction, only for the president to subsequently attack him. More recently, Maher was honored with the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center in June, which preceded another round of direct meetings.
In addition to political criticisms, the president took aim at Maher's personal habits in his lengthy post, labeling him a major pothead and asserting that the behavior was harmful to his health. Trump also told the host not to contact him anymore, effectively ending their tentative diplomatic engagements.
Representatives for HBO and Bill Maher did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the social media statement. The exchange leaves their previously warming relationship severely fractured as the political commentator returns to regular critiques of the administration.
