Two young women were shot and killed late Thursday evening in the parking lot of a restaurant in Rivière-du-Loup, Quebec, prompting a major investigation by the Sûreté du Québec. Emergency services rushed to the scene near the intersection of Cartier Boulevard and Plourde Street around 10:45 p.m. following reports of gunfire. First responders discovered two severely injured women inside a vehicle. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second succumbed to her injuries shortly after being transported to a regional hospital.

Investigators have identified the victims as 25-year-old Noémie Dionne and 19-year-old Cassandre Hamel Hardy, both locals from the Bas-Saint-Laurent region. According to preliminary reports, neither woman was an employee or a customer of the restaurant where the shooting occurred. The Sûreté du Québec's Major Crimes Investigation Unit has taken charge of the case, treating the incident as a targeted double homicide.

As of Friday, authorities had not made any arrests, and a large perimeter remained established around the commercial area for forensic analysis. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots that sounded initially like fireworks before seeing vehicles speeding away from the parking lot into the dark. Investigators are currently reviewing potential motives, with preliminary indications suggesting the violence may be tied to the local drug trade.

The tragedy has deeply unsettled residents of Rivière-du-Loup, a municipality that had not recorded a single murder in 13 years. Local journalist Steven Rivard noted that community members feel a sense of unease and distrust following police links to drug-related conflicts. Retired organized crime police officer Roger Ferland observed that this type of violent crime is increasingly shifting eastward into regional areas, raising concerns among local residents accustomed to a quiet environment.

Political leaders at both the provincial and federal levels expressed their sorrow and solidarity with the grieving community. Guy Jr Lapointe, the newly sworn-in Minister of Internal Security for Quebec, addressed the public on social media. "Violence claims too many victims in Quebec, and beyond every tragedy, the population's sense of security suffers each time," he wrote, declaring his determination to combat violence and ensure public safety.

Local elected officials also shared their condolences and praised the swift response of emergency personnel. Ariane Boyer, the newly elected provincial representative for the area, offered her thoughts to the families and thanked the police, paramedics, and hospital staff. Federal representative Bernard Généreux similarly expressed deep gratitude to the first responders who managed the grim situation under difficult circumstances as the investigation continues.
