Early Winter Storm Brings Heavy Snow and Subfreezing Temperatures to Western Canada
Treacherous road conditions, highway closures, and plunging temperatures hit the Canadian Prairies as winter arrives ahead of schedule.
A major autumn snowstorm swept across the Canadian Prairies on Wednesday, delivering the season's first significant snowfall to the region, creating hazardous travel conditions, and triggering highway closures in Alberta. The storm brought widespread snow to communities throughout Alberta and Saskatchewan, while also extending into parts of Manitoba, marking a sudden transition to early winter weather and prompting official advisories across Western Canada.
Deteriorating road conditions prompted immediate police intervention and regional travel advisories. In Lac Ste Anne County, Alberta, severe winter conditions forced officials to close roadways, with authorities recommending that motorists avoid travel entirely. Parkland Royal Canadian Mounted Police announced that the highway connecting Highway 777 and Highway 779 was shut down following multiple vehicle collisions on extremely icy pavement. Because the storm struck in late October, many drivers had not yet installed winter tires on their vehicles, significantly reducing road traction and prompting officials to urge extreme caution for all commuters.
Accumulations mounted quickly across major population centers and transportation routes. By early Wednesday morning, Calgary had already recorded two centimeters of snow accumulation, with periodic flurries forecast to add several more centimeters throughout the day. Snowfall was even more persistent across central and northern areas, impacting Edmonton, Fort McMurray, and Saskatoon. Along the Yellowhead Highway, heavier snowfall reduced visibility and led to notable traffic slowdowns for regional drivers navigating the slippery thoroughfare.
The hazardous conditions prompted Environment and Climate Change Canada to release multiple weather alerts. The federal weather agency issued a special weather statement for the Edmonton area, warning that total snow accumulations could reach up to ten centimeters by Thursday morning. In northern Alberta, meteorologists also placed the Fort McMurray area under a formal snowfall warning as the intense winter system advanced.
Behind the snow, a sharp temperature drop is taking hold across the region. A robust upper-level trough is projected to dip across Western Canada on Thursday behind the snowy system, creating an atmospheric pattern that funnels frigid northern air southward into Alberta. As a result, daytime high temperatures dropped below the freezing mark for most of the province on Wednesday, with forecast highs of minus one degree Celsius in Calgary, minus two degrees Celsius in Red Deer, and minus one degree Celsius in Edmonton. These communities had not experienced a daytime high below freezing since late April.
While Alberta and Saskatchewan bore the brunt of the storm, forecasters noted that the broader disturbance would also bring light accumulation to portions of northern and western Manitoba. Meteorologists indicated that while snow and reduced visibility would persist through Wednesday along the Yellowhead corridor, atmospheric conditions and highway visibility are expected to gradually improve by Thursday morning.
The winter weather in Canada coincided with similar early-season snow events across the Pacific. In northern Japan, residents in Sapporo, Hokkaido, recorded their first snowfall of the season as a brisk front produced strong winds and freezing temperatures. The Japanese city experienced bursts of hard pellets and sticky snow, following earlier accumulations at nearby Nakayama Pass and signaling the start of winter driving challenges, vehicle tire changes, and rising home heating demands in the northern hemisphere.
