Eugenia Martínez de Irujo Unveils Hand-Knotted Rug Collection Inspired by Seville
The Spanish aristocrat collaborated with Alfombras Hamid on 12 custom designs honoring her mother.
Eugenia Martínez de Irujo, the Duchess of Montoro, has officially presented "Patio silencioso," an exclusive collection of 12 rug designs created in partnership with Alfombras Hamid, the oldest oriental rug company in Spain. Unveiled on October 27, the decorative arts project marks a new milestone in the aristocrat's creative career by translating her original floral paintings into luxury floor coverings. The launch highlights her artistic vision while honoring her family roots and childhood memories in the southern Spanish city of Seville.
The collaboration represents more than a year of meticulous artisan work, with every piece in the collection hand-knotted by experienced craftsmen. Manufactured from materials including fine wool and bamboo silk, the pieces are designed to bring the botanical elements of Martínez de Irujo’s artwork into living spaces. Alfombras Hamid confirmed that the collection also accommodates custom sizing, allowing homeowners to adapt the intricate oriental rug designs to their specific interior requirements.
The central aesthetic of "Patio silencioso" draws deeply from the colors, scents, and gardens of the Palacio de las Dueñas in Seville, where Martínez de Irujo was raised. The title itself finds inspiration in the celebrated line by Spanish poet Antonio Machado, "My childhood is memories of a courtyard in Seville," reflecting the poet's admiration for the palace courtyard where he was born. Martínez de Irujo explained that the Andalusian environment provided an enduring well of creative inspiration, recalling the natural aromas of orange blossom, olive trees, geraniums, and rosemary.
The collection also serves as an explicit personal tribute to her late mother, Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart, the famed Duchess of Alba. Among the floral motifs, the orchid takes on special familial significance. "I also wanted to represent her, and I did so with an orchid, which was her favorite flower," Martínez de Irujo explained regarding the tribute. Artistic expression has long run in the family, as the late Duchess was an avid painter herself, instilling both a passion for canvas and a profound affection for Andalusia in her daughter from an early age.
Martínez de Irujo's work on this collection builds on an established history in the visual arts. In 2020, she staged her first public charity exhibition of paintings in Madrid, introducing audiences to her vibrant floral compositions. Reflecting on her transition into home design, she shared her longstanding enthusiasm for interior spaces. "I have always been passionate about decoration and have enjoyed creating spaces my own way, which is why being part of this project makes me especially thrilled," she stated, emphasizing that a carefully crafted rug holds the unique ability to transform an entire room.
Each of the 12 individual designs in the series bears a botanical name reflecting traditional Andalusian flora, such as Azahar, Campanilla, Clavel, Geranio, Gitanillas, Limonero, Olivo, Orquídea, Pensamientos, and Romero. The patterns feature vivid contrasts and subtle tones alike, ranging from delicate pastel petals to striking red floral displays set against vibrant yellow backgrounds. By combining diverse visual styles with traditional weaving techniques, the designs reflect the duchess's personal penchant for energetic palettes and eclectic interior arrangements.
Martínez de Irujo showcased the results of the project across her social media platforms, organizing a dedicated debut featuring multiple coordinated ensembles that echoed the aesthetics of her rugs. Highlighting relaxed silhouettes, romantic embroidered blouses, and high-waisted trousers in soft mauve and baby blue shades, her presentation drew significant praise for its cohesive visual styling. Reflecting on the completed endeavor, the Duchess of Montoro summarized the project as "the most beautiful collaboration I have ever done."
