European Council President António Costa has proposed holding the bloc's upcoming spring summit in Rome to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the 1957 Treaty of Rome. The initiative to relocate the regular March 18-19 meeting from Brussels to the Italian capital originated with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and has garnered Costa's support, though it still requires approval from all member states.

The 1957 Treaty of Rome stands as a foundational moment for the European Union, having established the common market that propelled regional economic integration. In outlining the broader schedule for upcoming leadership gatherings, an EU spokesperson noted that Costa has also slated a November 13 meeting in Dublin centered heavily on artificial intelligence.

Following the Dublin gathering, leaders are scheduled to convene for an extraordinary session in Brussels on November 26-27 to address the long-term budget and support for Ukraine. The final summit of the year will take place in Brussels starting December 17, while the initial meeting of 2027 is scheduled for February 5 in Alden Biesen, Belgium.

In a separate diplomatic development involving Rome, Italy and Spain announced the termination of mutual border controls. Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi and his Spanish counterpart, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, agreed during a telephone conversation that the checks, which were initially established following an influx of migrants into the Spanish North African enclave of Ceuta, would not be extended.

The interior ministries stated that the decision followed a careful analysis of the situation and a recent meeting between Prime Minister Meloni and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez at the European Council. While the temporary controls had sparked a diplomatic rift regarding internal security concerns, both nations plan to enhance information sharing to safeguard the Schengen area moving forward.

Meanwhile, in European club soccer, former AS Roma youth product and current Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori has reportedly drawn long-term interest from prominent clubs including Real Madrid and Chelsea. Following a strong performance in a recent match against Bayern Munich, reports indicate that any potential transfer negotiations for the 24-year-old Italian international would command an exceptionally high valuation from Arsenal, where he remains under contract.
