Fatal Florida Plane Crash Kills Austin Tech Entrepreneur and Eight Others
A Learjet traveling from Texas to the Bahamas plummeted into a Palm Beach County neighborhood, claiming the lives of a family of four, their nanny, two friends, and two pilots.
A private Learjet carrying Austin tech entrepreneur Adam Robinson, his family, and several others crashed into a residential area in Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday afternoon, resulting in the deaths of all nine people on board. The aircraft, a Learjet 60 traveling from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas, entered a steep nosedive and burst into flames, scattering debris over a wide area and injuring one person on the ground.
The victims included 44-year-old Adam Robinson, founder and chief executive of software companies Retention.com and RB2B, along with his wife, Helen Sharp, and their two young children, four-year-old Emma and two-year-old Charlie. Also killed in the crash were the family's nanny, Anita Maria Apellido Cetina, two close family friends, Rachael Reed and Charmi Fehr, and the two pilots.
The families of the victims shared their grief in a joint statement posted on Facebook, describing the immense loss of their loved ones. "With broken hearts, our families share that Adam Robinson and Helen Sharp, their children Emma and Charlie, Rachael Reed and Charmi Fehr, and Anita Maria Apellido Cetina were among those lost aboard the flight that went down near Greenacres, Florida, on November 1," the statement read. Friends and relatives remembered Robinson and Sharp as devoted parents, while noting that Cetina and the accompanying friends were cherished members of their inner circle.
The flight deck was commanded by 55-year-old captain Jeff Gregory, alongside 20-year-old co-pilot Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras. Filgueiras, who earned her private pilot’s license at just 17 while attending West Boca Raton High School, had accumulated 1,300 hours of flying experience. Her mother, Camila, expressed heartbreak over her daughter's passing, noting that she was living her lifelong dream as a commercial pilot.
According to preliminary findings from the National Transportation Safety Board, the crew reported encountering moderate turbulence and icing conditions at 35,000 feet shortly before the disaster. The pilots requested an altitude increase to 37,000 feet, and less than 30 seconds after reporting the weather challenges, the aircraft entered a rapid descent and issued a distress call.
Investigators stated that preliminary evidence indicates the aircraft may have begun breaking up before impact, scattering wreckage across more than a mile of Palm Beach County. The NTSB continues to investigate icing and structural factors as potential contributors to the crash.
The catastrophic impact forced hundreds of residents from 77 nearby mobile homes into emergency shelters, and Palm Beach County Mayor Sara Baxter declared a local emergency. Federal authorities have urged witnesses to submit any photographic or video evidence as the investigation into the tragedy proceeds.
