Two individuals, both approximately 70 years old, were killed in a tragic traffic accident on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, in Lavelanet, France. The incident occurred around 6:15 p.m. on Avenue Léon-Blum, a residential area in the Ariège department.

According to the public prosecutor of Foix, Olivier Mouysset, the victims were walking on a sidewalk when they were struck by a vehicle. Both pedestrians died at the scene of the impact. Local authorities, including the Lavelanet autonomous territorial brigade, have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.

The driver involved in the accident was taken into custody shortly after the event. During questioning, the individual stated that he had no memory of the incident. The driver, who suffers from epilepsy, claimed to have taken his prescribed medication. While initial screening tests for substances were negative, blood samples have been sent for further analysis to confirm these findings.

The prosecutor noted that the driver is known to local law enforcement, particularly for previous traffic-related offenses involving driving under the influence of narcotics. An accident reconstruction expert was dispatched to the scene to assess the vehicle's speed and other factors contributing to the crash, though official results from this analysis remain pending.

Following his appearance before the court on Thursday, October 22, the suspect was placed under judicial supervision. This decision by the investigating magistrate stood in contrast to the recommendations made by the public prosecutor's office, which had sought more restrictive measures. The prosecution has formally announced its intention to appeal the decision.

As the investigation continues, authorities are working to piece together the events of that evening. To date, no direct witnesses to the collision have been identified, leaving investigators to rely heavily on forensic evidence and expert analysis to determine the precise cause of the tragedy.
