Top seed Flavio Cobolli advanced to the quarterfinals of the Lyon Open by defeating Swiss veteran Stan Wawrinka 6-2, 6-4 in a match lasting one hour and nine minutes. Cobolli, ranked sixth in the world, utilized his dominant baseline play and controlled the pace throughout the second-round encounter.

The victory marks Cobolli's third career win against Wawrinka in as many meetings, keeping his momentum alive as he pursues a qualification spot for the ATP Finals in Turin. After receiving a first-round bye, the 24-year-old Italian capitalized on three of his four break-point opportunities while saving the only break point he faced.

Wawrinka entered the match following a taxing three-set victory over Martín Landaluce the previous day. The 41-year-old former world number three, competing on a wild card, started the first set competitively before Cobolli seized control by winning 12 of 15 points to secure the opening frame 6-2 in 26 minutes.

In the second set, Cobolli broke Wawrinka's serve early in the third game to take a 2-1 lead. Although Wawrinka attempted to shift the momentum, the Italian maintained his advantage, sealing the victory with a 6-4 scoreline in the second set.

Statistics highlighted Cobolli's dominance on the court, as he won a total of 58 points compared to Wawrinka's 41. The Italian struck 22 winners against just 10 from his opponent, while keeping his unforced errors to 15.

With this defeat, Wawrinka shifts his focus to the upcoming tournament in Basel, which will serve as the final stop of his decorated professional career. Organizers of the Swiss Indoors are planning a special ceremony to honor the three-time Grand Slam champion.

Cobolli will now face either fifth seed Brandon Nakashima of the United States or French qualifier Kyrian Jacquet in the quarterfinals as he continues his campaign in France and fights for a place in the season-ending championships.
