Former DSDS Contestant Jan Wächter Faces Terminal Cancer Diagnosis
The 37-year-old former talent show participant is sharing his journey with rare adrenal cancer and using music to inspire others.
Former "Deutschland sucht den Superstar" contestant Jan Wächter is facing a terminal cancer diagnosis after the rare disease returned with metastases in his liver. The 37-year-old first gained public attention during his appearance on the singing competition show in 2017, where he won over viewers with his laid-back personality.
Wächter's health struggles began in 2025 when he experienced severe back pain and a stabbing sensation near his heart. Medical examinations revealed an adrenocortical carcinoma, a rare form of cancer that affects only about 100 people in Germany each year. He described the initial tumor as nearly the size of a handball.
Surgeons at the time successfully removed the massive growth during a multi-hour operation, which was followed by a grueling tablet therapy that took a heavy toll on his physical well-being. Although the former insurance representative was considered cancer-free for a few months, a routine checkup in July brought devastating news that the cancer had returned and spread to his liver.
Wächter is currently receiving care at the Heidelberg University Hospital, where medical professionals are evaluating potential treatment options. The illness has drastically altered his life, forcing him to step away from his work as a social media manager, cancel all of his professional contracts, and rely on sickness benefits while losing financial stability and personal relationships.
Despite the severe prognosis, Wächter maintains an optimistic outlook and has chosen to speak openly about his condition on social media. He recently launched a project called "CNCR SOUNDS," combining music, poetry, and motivational quotes to support other cancer patients, reduce fear, and remind them that they are not alone in their struggles.
To help support his creative endeavors while he is unable to work normal hours, Wächter set up a GoFundMe page, which he compares to an open suitcase used by street musicians. He emphasized that donations are entirely voluntary and that supportive words can often carry much more value than money.
Reflecting on his mortality, Wächter stated that he does not fear death despite being in the advanced stages of the illness. "My soul is not ready to die," he said, adding that he views his ongoing battle as an opportunity to broaden his horizons and give hope to others who are facing difficult times.
