Former UN Official Accuses Francesca Albanese of Anti-Israel Bias
Alice Jill Edwards criticized United Nations special rapporteurs for failing to document the horrors of the October 7 attacks.
Former United Nations special rapporteur Alice Jill Edwards has launched sharp accusations against Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, citing what she described as a tangible anti-Israel obsession. In a recent interview, Edwards stated that the UN largely failed to adequately address the plight of Hamas hostages and their families following the October 7, 2023 attacks, while also producing reports that she termed one-sided.
Edwards, an Australian legal expert who served as the UN special rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment until July, expressed deep regret regarding the actions of her former colleagues. Specifically, she criticized Albanese and Reem Alsalem, the special rapporteur on violence against women, for allegedly omitting formal documentation of the massacres and terror attacks carried out on October 7. According to Edwards, despite a growing body of evidence, the officials chose to contest the facts and instead published virulent and unbalanced reports.
During her tenure, Edwards traveled to the Kfar Aza kibbutz more than a year after the tragedy to meet with the relatives of hostages and investigate the events firsthand. Walking through the damaged homes alongside grieving mothers, she witnessed the aftermath of the assault. These harrowing encounters reinforced her conviction that hostage-taking constitutes a form of psychological and physical torture, not only for the direct captives who face abuse and deprivation, but also for their families enduring prolonged psychological torment.
The former UN official asserted that the organization undermined its foundational pillars of neutrality, independence, and impartiality by focusing obsessively on a single category of abuses during the conflict between Gaza and Israel. She recalled drafting a formal report regarding the events at the kibbutzim and the Nova festival, noting that only one other special rapporteur was willing to sign it, while others attempted to suppress portions of her findings.
The controversy surrounding Albanese's reports has also resonated locally in international political discourse. In related developments, student protests erupted at the University of Turin during the academic year inauguration, where demonstrators targeted Ambassador Maurizio Massari—Italy's former permanent representative to the UN who criticized Albanese's 2025 Gaza genocide report—alongside university leadership and institutional agreements.
Despite internal friction and resistance from fellow mandate holders, Edwards highlighted one positive outcome from her advocacy efforts: she successfully steered a resolution through the United Nations General Assembly mandating member states to legally classify hostage-taking as an act of torture.
