French Blood Establishment Cold Storage Target of Cyberattack

Hackers targeted a third-party refrigeration provider, raising temperatures in cold rooms housing plasma and blood samples, though officials confirmed no health impact.

Refrigeration systems utilized by the French Blood Establishment were compromised in a cyberattack occurring overnight between November 1 and November 2. The incident targeted a third-party refrigeration maintenance provider, Coolworld, leading to unauthorized temperature adjustments in cold storage units across three regional sites.

The affected cold rooms, which normally operate at a freezing minus 30 degrees Celsius to properly preserve biological materials, experienced dangerous temperature anomalies. Reports indicated that the settings were manipulated to push the internal temperature as high as 110 degrees Celsius.

The targeted facilities housed critical medical supplies, including donor samples utilized for health monitoring, frozen plasma intended for patient transfusions, and plasma designated for pharmaceutical fractionation. A sharp disruption to the cold chain risks rendering these vital blood products completely unusable for medical care.

Despite the alarming nature of the breach, public health authorities and the blood establishment moved quickly to reassure the public. An on-duty technician noticed the abnormal temperature spikes overnight, allowing staff to intercept the malicious activity before substantial damage could occur.

Officials emphasized that the extreme temperature figures represented the settings requested by the hackers rather than the actual internal temperature reached by the storage units. Thanks to automated alarm systems and rapid human intervention, the situation was swiftly contained.

The French Ministry of Health confirmed that there were zero operational consequences resulting from the cyberattack. Staff neutralized remote access to the compromised equipment, reinforced ongoing technical monitoring, and proactively transferred stored products to alternative secure installations.

No health impacts have been identified, and no blood product losses have been declared following the incident. Technical investigations are currently underway, involving the National Agency for Information Systems Security, to determine the exact modus operandi and circumstances surrounding the breach of the refrigeration provider.
