Gold and Silver Prices Rebound Ahead of Dhanteras Festival
Precious metals see renewed demand as a weaker US dollar and midterm election results influence global markets.
Gold and silver prices have experienced a notable recovery in early November, driven by a softer US dollar and shifting market sentiment following the recent US midterm elections. As consumers in India prepare for the auspicious Dhanteras festival, the precious metals market is seeing a surge in activity, with analysts closely monitoring how these price movements will affect holiday sales volumes.
On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold futures for December delivery saw a rise of approximately 1.48 percent, reaching Rs 1,45,356 per 10 grams. Similarly, silver prices recorded their first significant gains of the month, climbing to Rs 1,90,200 per kilogram. This upward momentum follows a period of volatility, where prices had previously faced downward pressure due to rising interest rates and geopolitical tensions.
Market analysts attribute the recent rally to the reaction of global financial markets to the US midterm election results. Jateen Trivedi, a research analyst at LKP Securities, noted that significant short covering emerged as the election outcomes suggested a potential legislative gridlock, which could limit fiscal expansion. This uncertainty, combined with lower Treasury yields and falling crude oil prices, has bolstered the appeal of gold as a safe-haven asset.
Despite the price correction, industry experts hold mixed views on whether this will translate into higher sales volumes for the festive season. Rajesh Rokde, Chairman of the All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council, stated that while the decline in prices has improved consumer sentiment, volume growth is expected to remain flat compared to last year. However, in terms of total value, sales are projected to grow by approximately 30 percent.
The shift in consumer behavior is also becoming evident, with a growing preference for lightweight and versatile jewelry. Suvankar Sen, CEO of Senco Gold Ltd, observed that buyers are becoming more experimental, exploring different caratages and designs. This trend is particularly visible in the wedding segment, where consumers are increasingly opting for 18-karat gold and incorporating silver jewelry into their traditional rituals.
Looking ahead, the sustainability of this rally remains a point of discussion among financial experts. While the immediate outlook is constructive, analysts advise investors to remain cautious. Vikram Subburaj, CEO of Giottus, emphasized that market participants are now awaiting upcoming US employment data to gauge the Federal Reserve's next policy moves. Expectations of tighter monetary policy could potentially support the dollar and limit further gains for precious metals.
As the Dhanteras festival approaches, the jewelry industry remains optimistic about achieving growth. While some experts anticipate a slight decline in volume-wise sales due to the elevated baseline rates, the overall value of the market is expected to remain robust. Consumers are encouraged to monitor currency fluctuations and international price trends as they make their festive purchases.
