The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation has initiated a fundraising campaign to support the restoration of a historic Iwo Jima monument near Marine Corps Base Quantico following extensive vandalism. The incident, which occurred on the evening of October 22, caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage to the limestone sculpture.

Prince William County police officers arrived at the scene shortly after 10 p.m. and caught 27-year-old Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano actively swinging a sledgehammer at the memorial. The monument, created by renowned artist Felix de Weldon, depicts the historic flag-raising atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945. It serves as a smaller version of the iconic Marine Corps War Memorial located in Arlington.

The attack left the statue with severe structural damage, including the decapitation of one of the sculpted Marine figures and missing facial features such as a nose. Authorities stated that the cost to repair the monument is estimated in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Following the incident, law enforcement charged Maldonado Soriano with felony destruction of property, trespass with intent to damage property, and felony injury to a monument. He is currently being held without bond.

Federal sources and reporting by journalist Bill Melugin indicated that Maldonado Soriano is a Mexican national who entered the United States in December 1999. According to reports, he previously held DACA status granted under the Obama administration and extended under the Biden administration, but his status lapsed in August after it was not renewed.

The vandalism drew swift condemnation from federal officials and the public alike. White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers issued a strong statement regarding the suspect and the state of immigration enforcement.

"This criminal illegal alien's dream is over. Maldonado Soriano disrespected our brave service members and defaced a beautiful monument that honored their sacrifice," Rogers told The New York Post, adding remarks concerning border security policies.

Members of the public expressed widespread outrage on social media over the desecration of a memorial dedicated to one of the bloodiest battles in Marine Corps history. Observers and military families voiced deep personal hurt over the damage inflicted on the monument honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War II.

The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation hopes the newly launched fundraising effort will quickly gather the necessary resources to thoroughly repair the landmark and restore its tribute to the service members of Iwo Jima.
