TSG Hoffenheim hosted Olympique Lyonnais at the SNP Arena for a matchday 3 duel in the UEFA Europa League. Entering the fixture, the German hosts sought their first points of the continental campaign after suffering defeats against CFI Crete and Beşiktaş. Meanwhile, the visiting French side arrived in Sinsheim with a spotless record, having won both of their opening two games in the league phase.

Hoffenheim manager Christian Ilzer made several adjustments to his starting lineup to manage ongoing fixture congestion. The hosts took the pitch with Baumann in goal, supported defensively by Rots, Kabak, Hranac, and Coufal. Avdullahu marshaled the midfield alongside Conté and Prass, while the attack featured Lemperle, Daghim, and Kramaric.

Lyon manager Paulo Fonseca deployed a 4-3-3 formation despite missing key personnel, including Loïs Openda due to injury. The visiting starting XI featured Greif in goal, with Bacher, team captain Mata, Kluivert, and Kango across the back line. Tessmann and Bidstrup controlled the center of the pitch, while Nartey, Boudache, Nakamura, and Himbert completed the lineup.

The opening minutes saw intense action at both ends of the pitch as the visiting side attempted an early high press. Hoffenheim quickly asserted control of possession, forcing the French defense into early pressure. Forward Daghim broke through the opposing backline early on, but failed to control the ball cleanly when presented with a one-on-one opportunity against goalkeeper Greif.

Lyon soon mounted their own offensive threats, highlighted by a powerful strike from Nakamura in the ninth minute. The Japanese forward gathered the ball inside the penalty area and unleashed a fierce half-volley, which Hoffenheim goalkeeper Baumann stopped by quickly diving to turn the ball away for a corner kick.

Moments later, Prass tested the visiting defense again by recovering a loose ball near the edge of the box following a set piece. His resulting shot was pushed away by a firm one-handed save from the Lyon goalkeeper, keeping the match scoreless as both teams battled for control during the opening quarter of an hour.

The fixture is part of a demanding stretch for the French club, which must balance its European ambitions with domestic competition. Following the match in Sinsheim, Lyon is scheduled to face a challenging away fixture at the Parc des Princes on Sunday, followed by a home match against Angers on October 31. Their Europa League schedule will resume on November 5 with a trip to face Real Sociedad.

Referee Halil Umut Meler officiated the encounter in Sinsheim, where Hoffenheim looked to build positive momentum following a weekend victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Bundesliga. With six points separating the two clubs prior to kickoff, the match carried significant implications for the standings as the league phase progressed.
