Holger Rune's Basel Run Ends in Quarterfinals Against Valentin Vacherot
The Danish tennis star fell in three sets at the ATP 500 event in Switzerland after a remarkable comeback journey from a severe injury.
Holger Rune's impressive run at the Swiss Indoors Basel came to an end on Friday in the quarterfinals, where he was defeated by Monaco's Valentin Vacherot with a score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Vacherot secured the victory at the ATP 500 tournament through a commanding service performance, hitting 20 aces and saving nine out of ten break points.
The match was closely contested throughout, with both competitors trading identical set scores before Vacherot pulled ahead in the final frame. Vacherot landed 74 percent of his first serves compared to Rune's 56 percent, while the Danish player struggled to capitalize on his ten break opportunities, successfully converting only one.
This encounter marked the second time Vacherot has defeated Rune in a major quarterfinal on the ATP tour, following a previous upset at the Shanghai Masters. With Friday's win, Vacherot advanced to the semifinals to face the winner of the match between Taylor Fritz and Arthur Fils.
Rune's appearance in the Basel quarterfinals followed a lengthy absence from the professional circuit due to a severe Achilles tendon injury sustained late last year at the Stockholm Open. Sidelined for nearly a year, Rune experienced a dramatic drop in the rankings, falling to world number 1,202 before returning to competition earlier in the month.
Despite the quarterfinal exit, Rune's performance in Switzerland set a historical milestone. By reaching the quarterfinals, he became the lowest-ranked player in ATP 500 history to reach that stage of a tournament, surpassing previous records held by Andy Murray and Joao Fonseca.
During his comeback campaign in Basel, Rune notched a hard-fought opening victory against Quentin Halys and followed it up with a thrilling win over Hubert Hurkacz in a tight third-set tiebreak. Reflecting on his victory against Hurkacz earlier in the week, Rune expressed deep satisfaction with his physical recovery.
"I am thrilled, it makes me very happy to see that I am capable of playing at a high level so soon after my return," Rune told the ATP Tour. "I feel like this is the first match since my return to the courts where I truly felt like myself. Facing Hubi was an excellent test and I played at a very high level."
Following his successful matches in Basel, the former world number four and 2002 Paris Masters champion is projected to make a massive jump in the live ATP rankings, climbing hundreds of places upward as he continues his journey back to the top of the professional circuit.
