India Defeats New Zealand in Third T20I to Secure Series Victory
Abhishek Sharma smashed a remarkable century to lead India past a 199-run target and clinch the five-match series in Wellington.
India secured a dominant six-wicket victory over New Zealand in the third T20 International on Tuesday at the Westpac Trust Stadium in Wellington, taking an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series. Opening batter Abhishek Sharma led the charge with a phenomenal, record-breaking performance to chase down a 199-run target in just 13.2 overs.
After winning the toss, India captain Shreyas Iyer elected to field first. New Zealand posted a competitive total of 198 for 3 in their allotted 20 overs. Daryl Mitchell anchored the Black Caps' innings with an unbeaten 89 off 52 deliveries, featuring five fours and five sixes. Mitchell shared an 86-run partnership with Finn Allen, who contributed 40 runs from 25 balls after opening batter Tim Seifert fell early to Arshdeep Singh.
New Zealand continued to build momentum through the middle and death overs, adding 75 runs in an unbroken fourth-wicket stand between Mitchell and Bevon Jacobs, who finished not out on 39 off 23 deliveries. Indian bowlers Arshdeep Singh, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Axar Patel claimed one wicket apiece to help restrict the hosts below the 200-run threshold.
In response, India's batting lineup launched a historic assault during the Powerplay. Abhishek Sharma and 15-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi combined to construct the highest-ever Powerplay score in international cricket, reaching 118 without loss after six overs. The opening pair dismantled the New Zealand bowling attack, which included early pressure from opening bowler Jacob Duffy.
Abhishek delivered a masterclass in power-hitting, registering 113 runs from just 38 balls. His explosive innings included 11 towering sixes and nine boundaries at a strike rate approaching 300, bringing up his century in only 35 balls. Meanwhile, teenage sensation Sooryavanshi played a fearless knock of 45 runs from 18 balls before falling to break the record 133-run opening partnership.
Despite New Zealand securing a couple of late wickets through Kyle Jamieson and Matthew Fisher, India maintained their aggressive momentum. Tilak Varma and Naman Dhir calmly steered the visitors across the finish line, sealing the series victory with 40 balls to spare. The triumph marks India's third consecutive T20I series win on New Zealand soil.
