Insolvent Auto Dealer König Reaches Deals With Automakers Over Undelivered Cars
Agreements with Stellantis and Renault offer relief to thousands of buyers as an investor weighs a takeover of the German dealership chain.
Berlin-based dealership network Autohaus König, which filed for insolvency late this past August, has negotiated initial agreements with automakers Stellantis and Renault, bringing relief to thousands of customers awaiting paid-for vehicles. The collapse of the prominent retail chain has put immense financial pressure on roughly 82 operational sites across Germany and raised serious concerns for approximately 1,200 employees whose jobs hang in the balance.
The dealership's insolvency has left an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 buyers in limbo after they paid in full or in part for new or used vehicles, according to industry reporting from Automobilwoche. The affected group includes numerous customers who had already turned over their trade-in vehicles as part of the purchasing process. Across the company's retail network, hundreds of buyers of Renault and Dacia vehicles alone have spent weeks waiting for answers regarding whether their ordered cars will ever arrive.
Now, the newly reached understandings with major European carmaker Stellantis and French automaker Renault represent the first signs of progress for distressed vehicle purchasers. An insolvency administration spokeswoman confirmed the developments to Bild, emphasizing that officials are focusing heavily on finding solutions. "We are working at full speed to create suitable solutions for as many customers as possible," the spokeswoman said, pointing out that resolution paths will vary depending on individual agreements.
The administration stressed that the exact resolution for each buyer will hinge on the detailed terms outlined in their original purchase contracts. The spokeswoman stated that how payments are handled and which vehicles can ultimately be delivered will emerge from the ongoing case-by-case examination of all files. Customers are expected to receive binding, legally compliant notifications about their orders step by step as each agreement is processed.
Securing a resolution also requires extensive coordination with the automotive financial sector. Dealership officials and insolvency managers are maintaining close contact with the specialized banks that finance vehicle purchases and manage consumer leasing contracts. These financial institutions play an indispensable role in releasing vehicle titles, resolving customer loans, and establishing viable delivery mechanisms for vehicles that have already been contracted.
Behind the customer uncertainty lies a massive financial deficit. According to reports from German newspaper Die Welt, the dealership chain's accumulated debts have climbed beyond 212 million euros. When contacted by Bild for clarification regarding the firm's balance sheet, insolvency administrator Rainer Eckert declined to comment on the exact sum of money owed to creditors.
Despite the financial strain, there are encouraging developments regarding the company's workforce. The wages for the firm's roughly 1,200 staff members are expected to remain protected through November through statutory insolvency support payments. Maintaining payroll helps ensure that personnel can continue supporting ongoing customer contract evaluations and preserving operations across the dealership's nationwide locations during restructuring.
Meanwhile, a structural rescue for the dealership group may be taking shape through a potential corporate buyout. Die Welt identified Augsburg-based AVAG Holding, one of the premier automotive retail groups in Europe, as a potential investor interested in taking over the business. While the insolvency administration confirmed that talks with prospective buyers are actively taking place, it maintained discretion regarding specific negotiations, stating, "We do not comment on individual interested parties for reasons of mutual confidentiality."
