Italian Senate President Demands Apology from Historian Over Past Unrest
Ignazio La Russa seeks an immediate retraction from historian Michela Ponzani following comments made on television regarding a 1973 protest.
The President of the Senate in Italy, Ignazio La Russa, has demanded an immediate apology from historian Michela Ponzani, threatening legal action over what he describes as severely damaging false information regarding historical events from over fifty years ago. La Russa stated that he is prepared to forgo legal measures if the historian promptly retracts her statements, which he claims were distorted and instrumentally utilized within current public discourse.
The controversy originated from Ponzani's appearance on a television program discussing security decrees, where she recalled the events of April 12, 1973, known as Milan's "Black Thursday." During the broadcast, the historian asserted that if similar security measures had been in place at the time, "we probably would not have a Senate President today." She referenced an unauthorized right-wing demonstration organized by the youth organization Fuan, claiming that a hand grenade was thrown from within the march, resulting in the death of 22-year-old police officer Antonio Marino.
In response to these remarks, La Russa's legal representatives announced plans to proceed against the historian, maintaining that judicial records completely exclude any involvement by the current Senate leader in the officer's death or in the unauthorized protest itself. La Russa strongly condemned the statements as fake news that tarnishes his reputation and connected the public criticism to recent political tensions.
The announcement sparked a significant political and media mobilization among opposition parties, with figures from the Democratic Party and the Five Star Movement urging the high-ranking official to withdraw the legal threat. Lawmakers and public intellectuals argued that pursuing legal action against a historian for critical public analysis threatens academic freedom and open discussion. Cultural organizations also voiced concern, stating that historical research must remain free from political control.
Defending her position, Ponzani responded on social media by describing the situation as the consequence of recounting a historically established fact, characterizing the legal warnings as intimidation. Meanwhile, other commentators weighed into the ongoing dispute, debating the historical memory of the violent clashes and the responsibilities of political figures involved in past decades.
La Russa has reiterated that his demand for an apology applies not only to Ponzani but also to other individuals whose recent statements have associated his name with the historical tragedy. As political pressure continues to mount from various groups calling for a complete withdrawal of the legal threat, the public debate regarding the boundaries of historical interpretation and political accountability remains intensely active across the country.
