American teenager Iva Jovic defeated Italy's Jasmine Paolini 6-4, 6-3 in the round of 16 at the Ningbo Open on Thursday. The fourth-seeded player overcame an early deficit to secure her spot in the quarterfinals of the WTA 500 tournament.

Paolini had advanced to the second round earlier in the tournament following a challenging encounter against Ukraine's Anhelina Kalinina. After taking the first set 6-2, the Italian fell behind 0-5 in the second before mounting a remarkable comeback to win seven consecutive games and close out the match 6-2, 7-5 in one hour and forty minutes.

Facing Jovic on Center Court, Paolini started the match with strong momentum, attempting to dictate the rallies and pressure her opponent. However, the 18-year-old American quickly adjusted, raising her level of play and capitalizing on the Italian's serving struggles.

In the opening set, Jovic recovered from an early 3-1 deficit by breaking Paolini in the fifth and ninth games. Despite committing four double faults, the American found her rhythm in the decisive moments to take the first set 6-4.

The second set saw Jovic increase the pace and pressure from the baseline, forcing Paolini into a defensive position. Although the Italian battled back from a 4-1 deficit to narrow the score to 4-3, she struggled significantly with her serve, landing less than 40 percent of her first serves.

Jovic capitalized on these serving woes by breaking Paolini four times in the second set. Although the American lost her own serve twice, she maintained her composure to seal the victory 6-4, 6-3 after securing her fourth break of the set.

The win evened the head-to-head record between the two players at two wins apiece. It also marked Jovic's second consecutive victory over Paolini this season, following her triumph at the Australian Open earlier in the year.

With this victory, Jovic advanced to her seventh quarterfinal of the season and recorded her 42nd tour-level win of the year. She will next face the winner of the match between Alexandra Eala and Diana Shnaider as the tournament progresses toward the final on Sunday, October 25.
