German professional tennis player Jan-Lennard Struff earned his first victory against Novak Djokovic in nine attempts, defeating the fourth seed 6-7 (4), 7-5, 7-6 (5) on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Swiss Indoors Basel. The hard-fought match concluded with an ace, marking a major milestone for the 36-year-old athlete.

The defeat delivers a significant setback to Djokovic's aspirations of qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin. Entering the tournament needing a deep run to stay in contention, the Serbian star leaves the event stuck outside the qualifying positions in the live race with 2,890 points, though his opening win ensures he will return to the top ten in the rankings.

The contest was decided by fine margins, featuring a single break of serve and two tiebreaks. Djokovic secured the first set by taking the tiebreak 7-4. In the second set, with Struff leading 5-6, the German capitalized on his lone break opportunity of the match to level the score and force a deciding set. The third set mirrored the tension of the opener, ultimately ending in a 7-5 tiebreak victory for Struff.

Statistical records from the match highlighted a rare struggle for Djokovic, who played at least 18 return games without managing a single break against his opponent. This mirrored similar historical matches where he failed to break, including encounters against Roger Federer at the 2018 Paris Masters, Dominic Thiem at the 2020 ATP Finals, and Jannik Sinner at the 2024 Australian Open.

Prior to this encounter, Djokovic had claimed victory in all eight of their previous head-to-head meetings, most recently securing a straight-sets win at the 2025 US Open. Thursday's loss also halts Djokovic's 6-0 undefeated run at the ATP 500 level for the season, which included a title win in Beijing. Furthermore, it thwarted his bid to become the oldest quarterfinalist in the history of the Basel tournament.

Struff entered the tournament as a special exempt after reaching the Brussels final the previous week, opening his Basel campaign with a straight-sets win over qualifier Yannick Hanfmann. Competing in Basel for the first time since 2011, Djokovic had previously advanced past Frenchman Ugo Humbert in three sets.

The victory marks Struff's 42nd tour-level quarterfinal appearance, his third of the season following deep runs at Wimbledon and Brussels, and his second in Basel since 2019. It also counts as his fourth win over a top-20 opponent in 2026. Looking ahead, Struff is scheduled to face Portuguese player Nuno Borges in the quarterfinals for a spot in the semifinals.
