Julian Alvarez Secures 1-1 Draw for Atlético Madrid Against Stuttgart
Julian Alvarez ended his goal drought to rescue a crucial point for 10-man Atlético Madrid in the Champions League.
Julián Alvarez ended a lengthy goal drought to rescue a 1-1 draw for Atlético Madrid against VfB Stuttgart in the Champions League. The Argentine striker struck just seconds into the second half, canceling out Jamie Lewelling's opening goal for the German side and helping Diego Simeone's team secure four points from their opening three European matches.
Stuttgart dominated the opening 45 minutes under the guidance of manager Sebastian Hoeneß, applying heavy pressure from the very beginning. Bilal El Khannouss threatened within seconds of kickoff, forcing Atlético goalkeeper Jan Oblak into an important early save. Oblak was called upon repeatedly to keep the visitors in the contest as Stuttgart dictated the tempo.
The relentless home pressure finally yielded a breakthrough in the 36th minute. Marc Pubill lost possession to Angelo Stiller, who fed the ball to Jamie Lewelling. The forward executed a clever feint before cutting onto his left foot and firing a shot that found the back of the net, giving Stuttgart a richly deserved halftime lead.
Stimeone implemented tactical adjustments at the halftime interval, introducing Ademola Lookman into the lineup. The substitution paid immediate dividends just 14 seconds into the second half. Lookman delivered a cross into the penalty area, allowing Alvarez to finish with his left foot into the top corner to level the score.
The strike marked Alvarez's first goal of the season, ending a scoring drought that extended back to April 29, when he scored against Arsenal in the Champions League semifinals. With this effort, the Argentine forward reached 18 goals in 28 appearances in Europe's premier club competition for the Spanish club.
Following the equalizer, Atlético gained momentum and began to take control of the pitch. Pablo Barrios nearly completed the turnaround for the visitors, but Stuttgart goalkeeper Dennis Seimen produced a strong save to deny him. However, the momentum shifted once again past the hour mark when Morten Hjulmand received a straight red card in the 64th minute for a dangerous challenge above the ankle on Stiller.
The dismissal forced Simeone to alter his tactical approach, bringing on defensive reinforcements including Robin Le Normand and Obed Vargas to secure the backline. Despite enjoying a numerical advantage for the remainder of the match, Stuttgart could not capitalize on their territorial dominance.
As the clock wound down, Jeff Chabot and Grisha Prömel mounted a late assault for the German team, creating a couple of near misses that narrowly sailed past the posts. Four minutes of injury time expired without further scoring, leaving both squads to settle for a share of the points.
