Kawhi Leonard Returns to Toronto Raptors for Home Opener Against Bulls
Kawhi Leonard makes his long-awaited return to the Toronto Raptors for the team's home opener against the Chicago Bulls following a blockbuster trade.
Kawhi Leonard is set to make his official return to the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday night, seven years after he last played for the franchise, when Toronto hosts the Chicago Bulls for its home opener. Leonard famously played just one season in Toronto during the 2018-19 campaign, leading the franchise to its first and only NBA championship while securing the NBA Finals MVP award before leaving for the Los Angeles Clippers.
Following an offseason trade that sent Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, and a package of draft picks and selections to the Clippers, Leonard is back in Toronto. The acquisition brings the 35-year-old superstar back to the Eastern Conference alongside current franchise cornerstone Scottie Barnes, raising expectations for a deep playoff run and turning the Raptors into legitimate title contenders.
Ahead of his much-anticipated comeback, Leonard shared an emotional video message on social media expressing his deep connection to the city and fanbase. "Toronto, it's been a minute since I left. And one thing I learned about time: people move on. Things change, and even the greatest moments become memories. But some things, some things stay with you. What we shared here, that's forever. You never asked me to be anybody else. You let me be me," Leonard said.
Reflecting on his return to "The Six," the two-time NBA champion acknowledged the team's new direction while expressing confidence in the current roster. "They say the second time around isn't as good as the first, but we'll see. One thing I know: it wasn't luck the first time, and I still know what it takes. But I'm not here to live in the past; I'm here for what's next. Here in the north, we've got a young team, hungry and ready, and just like we had our moment, we're trying to shock the world again," Leonard added.
As the Raptors prepare to tip off their season under head coach Darko Rajakovic, attention will also center on how the team establishes its rotation around its new superstar duo of Leonard and Barnes. Rajakovic and his coaching staff will look to build immediate rhythm and early-season momentum with a nearly full-strength roster.
On the injury front, the Raptors enter the home opener with center Nate Bittle listed as out due to ongoing right leg and foot issues that kept him sidelined through all four preseason games. Toronto officially converted Bittle into a two-way player ahead of the matchup, concurrently waiving fellow center Trey Jemison to finalize roster preparations.
Meanwhile, their opponents from Chicago arrive in Toronto facing a more extensive injury report. The Bulls have ruled out three players for the season opener—including center Nic Claxton, who remains out with a hamstring injury expected to sideline him for at least another two weeks, alongside Dailyn Swain and Jordan Hawkins due to illness.
In addition to their confirmed absences, the Bulls list four other players as probable for Wednesday's contest: Isaac Okoro with a knee issue, Leonard Miller with an adductor concern, Zach Collins dealing with a quad injury, and Tobe Awaka with a knee issue. The extensive list of banged-up players could heavily impact Chicago's depth and rotation flexibility as they attempt to slow down Leonard and the revamped Raptors squad.
