Koldo García and Legal Counsel Face Scrutiny Over Defense Funding and Allegations
The former government advisor and his attorney are embroiled in controversy regarding payments for legal services and claims of political interference.
Koldo García Izaguirre, the former advisor to the Spanish Ministry of Transport, remains at the center of a complex legal storm following his conviction and 19-year prison sentence in the so-called mask case. García, currently incarcerated at the Soto del Real facility, has consistently claimed that he was the target of a conspiracy involving the judiciary, law enforcement, and the opposition Partido Popular (PP). His defense attorney, Leticia de la Hoz, has recently faced her own legal challenges, including accusations of attempting to bribe a witness to protect the interests of the Socialist Party (PSOE).
The controversy surrounding the funding of García’s legal defense has intensified after court-ordered disclosures. While investigators previously scrutinized whether the PSOE had financed the defense to obstruct justice, De la Hoz recently provided documentation showing that the media outlet Okdiario paid 242,000 euros for the legal representation of the former advisor. The publication maintains that these funds were provided in exchange for the rights to a book and a documentary series regarding García’s experiences.
During a July hearing before the National Court, De la Hoz had initially refused to disclose the source of her fees, citing attorney-client privilege. At that time, she adamantly denied any connection to the Socialist Party, stating, "I have absolutely nothing to do with the PSOE, and they have not paid for Koldo’s defense regarding me." She further warned the prosecution that they were pursuing an incorrect theory, suggesting that the truth behind the payments would be a significant surprise to investigators.
The legal proceedings have been marked by mutual accusations of manipulation. García has alleged that representatives from the Partido Popular offered him a deal to avoid prison if he provided testimony damaging to the government of Pedro Sánchez. According to García, he was pressured to lie and implicate high-ranking officials in corruption schemes. These claims mirror the narrative pushed by his attorney, who argues that they are victims of a coordinated effort by the opposition to erode the government's electoral standing.
Separately, the professional background of Koldo García has faced renewed public questioning. Economist Gonzalo Bernardos recently criticized the criteria used for high-level appointments in state-owned entities, specifically citing García’s past tenure as a board member for Renfe Mercancías between 2019 and 2021. While the government defended the appointment at the time by stating that García met all legal requirements for the position, critics argue that such roles should prioritize technical expertise in the railway sector over political affiliation.
The ongoing legal battle continues to unfold against a backdrop of intense political tension. As the PSOE seeks to address these allegations ahead of upcoming electoral cycles, the defense team for García and De la Hoz maintains that they possess further evidence of a campaign of 'dirty war' orchestrated by the opposition. Meanwhile, the judiciary continues to investigate the obstruction of justice charges against the attorney, as the case remains a focal point of national political debate.
