Lamine Yamal Wins Third Consecutive Young Talent Award at Ballon d'Or Gala
The Barcelona and Spain forward finished third in the Ballon d'Or rankings following an exceptional season highlighted by a World Cup triumph.
FC Barcelona and Spain star Lamine Yamal was crowned the winner of the Young Talent of the Year award for the third consecutive time at the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London. The 19-year-old forward made history once again by extending an unprecedented streak for the trophy, previously known as the Kopa Trophy, which recognizes the best young player under 21 in world football.
During the gala, Yamal received the trophy in person from Ukrainian footballing legend Andriy Shevchenko. Despite claiming the prestigious honor, the young star expressed modesty and asserted that his teammate should have received the accolade instead. "It's an honour to receive this award," Yamal said. "I would have liked Cubarsí to have won, he deserves it, he has been great for a long time. I am very happy and I want to thank my club, the national team, everyone."
Yamal finished third overall in the main Ballon d'Or rankings, finishing behind Harry Kane, who took home the top prize, and Kylian Mbappé, who secured second place. His podium finish follows a standout campaign for both club and country that cemented his reputation among the elite players in the sport.
At the club level, Yamal played an instrumental role in Barcelona's success during the 2025-2026 season, helping the Catalan club capture both the La Liga and Spanish Super Cup titles. Over 45 appearances across all competitions for the blaugranes, he recorded 24 goals and 18 assists, directly contributing to 42 goals. Domestically, he was also named the Best Player in La Liga after registering 16 goals and 11 assists, leading the league in assists.
On the international stage, Yamal added a World Cup title to his resume after helping the Spanish national team secure victory in the tournament held in the United States, where Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in the final. Although physical problems limited his peak output during the tournament—finishing with one goal and one assist across eight appearances—the collective triumph marked another major milestone in his young career.
Yamal's historic third consecutive win for the young player award further reinforces Barcelona's prominent role in developing world-class talent, following previous victories by teammates Pedri in 2021 and Gavi in 2022. As he continues to break records and collect silverware, Yamal remains a central figure for both Barcelona and La Roja as they compete at the highest levels of professional football.
