Lauderhill Police Officer Accused of Stealing Dead Resident's Home
Authorities say a Florida officer who responded to a 2022 welfare check moved into the deceased homeowner's property and assumed his identity.
A Lauderhill Police Department officer was arrested and appeared in court after investigators accused him of taking over the home of a resident who died of natural causes and assuming his identity. Brian Louis Sguros, 35, faced a Broward County judge on Wednesday following his arrest on multiple felony charges, including official misconduct, criminal use of a deceased person's identification, and computer offenses.
The case began in July 2022 when officers responded to a welfare check at the home of 71-year-old Dennis Ionis West in Lauderhill, Florida. Neighbors had called 911 out of concern after noticing West had left groceries in his car and failed to return inside. Responding officers entered the residence and discovered West dead near the front door from natural causes.
According to the Broward Sheriff's Office and investigators, Sguros served as a backup officer during that initial response and subsequently saw an opportunity to exploit the situation. Authorities stated that Sguros contacted the Broward County Medical Examiner's Office, falsely claiming to be a friend of West and asserting that the homeowner had no surviving family members. Investigators noted there was no indication the two men knew each other, and West did indeed have lawful heirs.
In the weeks following the discovery, specifically by August 2022, Sguros allegedly took possession of the property without any legal right. Prosecutors and arrest affidavits outline a multi-year scheme where Sguros paid utility bills and property taxes under West's name. Furthermore, he is accused of using law enforcement databases without authorization to gather information on the deceased man and forging West's signature on a City of Lauderhill building permit application to conduct extensive renovations on the residence.
Neighbors living near the property recounted seeing Sguros frequently visiting the home, chatting with residents, and even discussing plans to convert the property into a short-term rental. The illicit operation unraveled after a complaint was filed with the Lauderhill Police Department in May of this year, prompting an internal affairs inquiry that eventually involved the Broward Sheriff's Office and the Broward County Property Appraiser's Crimes Against Property Unit.
During his court appearance before Broward County Circuit Court Judge Allison Gilman, Sguros's bond was set at $25,000, which he posted later that afternoon to secure his release from jail. As part of his release conditions, the judge ordered him to stay away from the victim's home. Chief of Police Constance Stanley emphasized that law enforcement personnel are sworn to protect citizens, including those who can no longer speak for themselves, adding that the badge does not place anyone above the law.
Sguros, who has been a member of the Lauderhill Police Department since March 2021, was initially placed on paid administrative leave when the internal investigation began in July. Following his formal arrest, the department changed his status to administrative leave without pay as the criminal case and internal administrative proceedings remain active.
