The 70th edition of the Ballon d'Or ceremony is set to take place this Monday in London, England. Hosted at the London Palladium Theatre, the event marks a significant departure from its traditional home at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. This change in venue serves as a tribute to Stanley Matthews, the English footballer who became the inaugural recipient of the award in 1956.

Organized by France Football magazine, the ceremony will evaluate player performances spanning from August 3, 2025, to July 19, 2026. This period includes major international competitions, most notably the FIFA World Cup hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The jury, comprised of specialized journalists from various nations and the top 100 players in the FIFA rankings, will determine the winners based on individual performance, collective achievements, and overall sportsmanship.

Brazil maintains a strong presence in this year's nominations across several categories. Vini Jr., Marquinhos, and Gabriel Magalhães are competing for the title of best male player. In the women's categories, goalkeeper Lorena has received nominations for both best female player and best goalkeeper of the year. Furthermore, the Brazilian club Flamengo is in contention for the award for best men's club of the season.

The competition for the best goalkeeper award features a diverse international field. Among the nominees is Vozinha, the Cape Verdean goalkeeper who has played for GD Chaves and Colo-Colo. He joins a list of notable candidates including Yassine Bounou, Thibaut Courtois, and Emiliano Martínez, all vying for recognition for their defensive contributions throughout the qualifying period.

The selection process involves a rigorous point-based system. Each member of the jury selects their top ten players from a list of 30 finalists, assigning points ranging from one to 15 based on their rankings. The individual who accumulates the highest total score across all ballots will be crowned the winner. The ceremony will be broadcast via the streaming platform DAZN, allowing fans worldwide to follow the results in real time.

Last year's ceremony saw Ousmane Dembélé and Aitana Bonmatí claim the top honors in the men's and women's categories, respectively. As the football community gathers in London, the event continues to celebrate the legacy of the sport while acknowledging the standout athletes who have defined the most recent competitive cycle.
