Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Nithya Raman Face Off in Tight Election
Incumbent Mayor Karen Bass and City Councilmember Nithya Raman are in a dead heat as Los Angeles voters head to the polls on Election Day.
Los Angeles voters head to the ballot boxes on Tuesday to decide the city's mayoral race between incumbent Mayor Karen Bass and challenger City Councilmember Nithya Raman. The contest in the nation's second-largest city has tightened dramatically in recent weeks, reflecting deep voter frustration over the cost of living, homelessness, public safety, and the decline of basic city services.
A poll conducted by the University of California, Berkeley's Institute of Governmental Studies and the Los Angeles Times showed both candidates locked in a dead heat at 40% support among likely voters. With about 19% of voters remaining undecided shortly before the election, both campaigns mounted aggressive final-day pushes across the city to secure last-minute support.
Bass, who is seeking a second term, campaigned on her record of addressing homelessness, fast-tracking housing construction, and improving public safety. During her final campaign blitz, she emphasized her commitment to clearing street encampments and making Los Angeles more affordable. "My closing message to voters is that this election is a real choice," Bass said during a campaign stop.
Raman, who entered the race after surprising the local political scene by challenging her long-time ally, centered her message on systemic change and accountability at City Hall. She has pledged to triple annual housing construction, increase oversight of spending on homelessness, and repair essential infrastructure like broken streetlights and potholes. Addressing supporters at UCLA, Raman criticized the current administration, stating that young people and residents have had their needs ignored for too long.
The final stretch of the campaign saw high-profile endorsements and sharp clashes over crisis management. While Bass secured backing from first-responder organizations, the Los Angeles Police Protective League, and billionaire developer Rick Caruso, her campaign faced scrutiny over her absence during the Palisades Fire when she was traveling in Ghana. Raman also faced political turbulence, including backlash over a debate remark regarding immigration enforcement history and a surprise loss of an endorsement from Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black.
Black, who directed a fundraising event for Raman in October, publicly pulled his support and endorsed Bass, citing Raman as an unreliable politician after she allegedly failed to show up to the event. Despite such hurdles, Raman maintained strong backing from the Los Angeles chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America and grassroots supporters focused on housing reform.
Beyond the mayoral showdown, California voters are also deciding contests for governor between Democrat Xavier Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton, alongside numerous congressional races and 14 statewide ballot propositions. Official vote centers across Los Angeles County open their doors from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday for in-person voting and ballot drop-offs, while county elections officials begin the official canvass process following the close of polls.
