Magnitude 7 Earthquake Strikes Tibet, Leaving at Least 16 Dead
Search and rescue operations are underway in the Nagqu region following the collapse of hundreds of homes.
A powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck the Tibet region of China on Thursday evening, resulting in at least 16 fatalities and dozens of injuries. The tremor, which occurred at 10:33 p.m. local time, caused significant structural damage, including the collapse of at least 339 homes and 20 livestock sheds in the northern city of Nagqu.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the epicenter was located approximately 191 kilometers east-northeast of Nagqu in a high-altitude, sparsely populated area. While the U.S. agency estimated the depth of the quake at 18 kilometers, China’s official Xinhua News Agency, citing the China Earthquake Networks Center, placed the depth at 10 kilometers. The region, situated more than 300 kilometers north of the Tibetan capital of Lhasa, is characterized by an average elevation exceeding 4,800 meters.
Emergency response efforts have been mobilized on a large scale, with more than 1,600 local personnel deployed to the affected areas. Rescue teams from police and fire departments are working to clear debris and provide shelter for displaced residents, utilizing thousands of tents, folding beds, and prefabricated housing units. Authorities have also distributed essential supplies, including winter clothing and flashlights, to aid those impacted by the disaster.
The earthquake has disrupted regional infrastructure, leading to the suspension of train services and the closure of a section of National Highway 317 due to rockfalls. State media reported that communication services in parts of the region have been interrupted. Furthermore, the China Earthquake Administration has activated a level II emergency response, the second-highest tier in the country's disaster management system, to coordinate the ongoing relief operations.
Reports regarding the number of injured vary slightly, with some sources citing 32 injuries and others reporting up to 46. Among those injured, at least 11 individuals are listed in serious condition. Local authorities are continuing to assess the full extent of the damage as search teams navigate the mountainous terrain. Weather conditions may complicate recovery efforts, as intermittent snow is forecasted for the region over the next three days.
This seismic event is considered the most significant to hit the region in the last five years. The area is prone to such activity due to the tectonic collision between the Eurasian and Indian plates, a geological process responsible for the formation of the Himalayas and the Tibetan plateau. Recent years have seen other major quakes in China, including a 7.1-magnitude event in Xinjiang in January 2024 and a deadly earthquake in Gansu province in December 2023.
