Marsha Blackburn Elected Governor of Tennessee

U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn made history on November 3 by becoming the first woman elected to serve as Tennessee's governor. The Republican candidate secured her victory during an election cycle that saw competitive races across the state and country.

Addressing supporters at her election night party in Nashville, Blackburn emphasized her commitment to the state. "My promise is pretty simple: Tennessee is going to be a state where hard work pays off, where families can put down roots, and where everyone has the opportunity to build a better future," she stated.

Blackburn will succeed fellow Republican Gov. Bill Lee, who reached his term limit after serving eight years in office. Governor-Elect Lee congratulated her in a public statement, noting that citizens placed their trust in a conservative leader focused on fiscal responsibility and community safety.

The gubernatorial race proved to be remarkably close. Unofficial results from the Tennessee Secretary of State showed Blackburn capturing approximately 45.5% of the vote, while Democratic nominee Jerri Green secured 42.9%. Fewer than 55,000 votes separated the two candidates.

Green conceded the race in Chattanooga alongside her family and campaign team, thanking supporters for making the contest one of the closest the state has witnessed in decades. Independent candidate David Hatley also conceded earlier in the evening after pouring personal funds into his campaign.

Throughout her campaign, Blackburn focused on activating her base through grassroots events and addressing various social and economic issues. Her political career spans decades, beginning with a run for Congress in 1992, followed by service in the state Senate and her eventual election to the U.S. Senate in 2018.
