Matteo Materazzi Shares ALS Battle and Experimental Treatment
The former sports agent and brother of soccer champion Marco Materazzi opened up about his diagnosis and the experimental therapy he underwent in the United States.
Matteo Materazzi, a 50-year-old former soccer player and sports agent, shared details of his ongoing battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) during an emotional television appearance alongside his wife, Maura Soldati. Diagnosed in September 2024 after first experiencing symptoms like limping in March of that year, Materazzi described the neurodegenerative condition as a ruthless illness that continuously strips away his physical abilities.
Despite the rapid progression and daily challenges, Materazzi expressed a sense of gratitude for having lived a healthy life up to the age of 50, highlighting his family and children. He noted that seeing young children in hospitals suffering from similar conditions deeply affects him, reflecting on his own outlook on life since receiving the diagnosis.
During their recent trip to the United States, Materazzi underwent an experimental, personalized treatment protocol for a rare genetic mutation associated with the disease. Soldati explained that she spent a year working tirelessly to gain access to the clinical trial, making her husband the first to undergo the experimental procedure.
While the couple observed a noticeable slowing of the disease following the treatment, they emphasized that they do not want to offer false hope to others. Materazzi stressed that the underlying motivation for pursuing the experimental therapy goes beyond his own health, stating that the intervention is ultimately for his children, given the genetic nature of the condition.
The couple's thirty-year relationship has also faced its own trials, including a temporary separation around the time of the diagnosis. Soldati ultimately returned home to care for her husband, and both have described how navigating the crisis together has renewed their bond. Soldati has dedicated herself entirely to his daily care, managing constant logistics and demanding hours while raising their two children, Geremia and Gianfilippo.
Materazzi continues to work within his professional limits and maintains a positive perspective, emphasizing that his mind remains clear. Through public appearances, the family hopes to raise awareness for ALS, support ongoing scientific research, and advocate for broader access to advanced therapeutic options for families facing similar hardships.
